Christians flock to Washington to pray for America to turn to God -- by electing Trump
Source: NBC News

Tens of thousands of evangelical Christians gathered on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on Saturday to pray for Americas atonement and for Donald Trumps return to the White House.
Organizers of the event, billed A Million Women, described the gathering and next months presidential election as a last stand moment to save the nation from forces of darkness. For hours, the gathered masses sang worship songs, waved flags symbolizing their belief that America was founded as an explicitly Christian nation and prayed aloud for Jesus to intercede on behalf of Trump in November.
If we dont stand now, said Grace Lin, who traveled from Los Angeles for the rally and came wearing a red Make America Great Again hat, then the enemy will take over our country. If that happens, thats the end.
Lou Engle, the self-described prophet who organized the event, said God told him in a dream to call on a million women to march on Washington in order to restore Gods dominion over the nation. Engle is a leader in the New Apostolic Reformation, a movement of charismatic Christians who for years have portrayed U.S. politics as a spiritual clash between good and evil and Trump as a flawed leader anointed by God to redeem the nation.

(136,386 posts)Alarmed by abortion and transgender rights, Christian activists are invoking the Old Testament story of Esther, the Jewish orphan who bravely saved her people.
'The biblical story of Esther, the Jewish orphan who became queen and bravely saved her people, has been a potent symbol for women and girls, a call to lead a life of courage, sacrifice and purpose.
Sojourner Truth invoked Esther as she fought for womens rights and civil rights. Hillary Clinton, when running for president in 2008, named Esthers story as a favorite. And prominent Black pastors have used her story to galvanize support for Vice President Kamala Harris as she seeks the White House.
On Saturday at the National Mall in Washington, the queens story is being marshaled once again, this time by a group of conservative and largely charismatic Christians, who drew hundreds of followers to A Million Women: an Esther Call to the Mall. . .
We just believe that theres a crisis, said Laura Zavala Allred, an organizer of the event. God, she said, has called modern-day Esthers for such a time as this, referencing the storys most well-known phrase.'>>>

There are 'me' centered people who have difficulty thinking beyond their own earthly fears and attachments. These people generally must learn through fate.
Then there are people who lift their eyes and see the needs and suffering of others and try to bring a balance.
They are out there. Most don't make a big thing of it, though. The bible repeatedly tells us to set an example so that others see and may be drawn from rage, pride and so on to higher realms of consciousness, such as love, peace, joy and light.

So, he declares himself the "protector of women." We won't fall for that. Now his followers are out there on "A Million Women" rally. Which is it, "Tens of thousands" or "hundreds"? Well, we don't care, still not gonna vote for him.

The Violent Take It By Force: The Christian Movement that is Threatening Our Democracy (Broadleaf, 2024)
A propulsive account of the network of charismatic Christians that consolidated support for Donald Trump and is reshaping religion and politics in the US.
Over the last decade, the Religious Right has evolved. Some of the more extreme beliefs of American evangelicalism have begun to take hold in the mainstream. Scholar Matthew D. Taylor pulls back the curtain on a little-known movement of evangelical Christians who see themselves waging spiritual battles on a massive scale. Known as the New Apostolic Reformation, this network of leaders and believers emerged only three decades ago but now yields colossal influence, galvanizing support for Trump and far-right leaders around the world. In this groundbreaking account, Taylor explores the New Apostolic Reformation from its inception in the work of a Fuller Seminary professor, to its immense networks of apostles and prophets, to its role in the January 6 riot. Charismatic faith provided righteous fuel to the fire that day, where symbols of spiritual warfare blazed: rioters blew shofars, worship music blared, and people knelt in prayer. This vision of charismatic Christianity now animates millions, lured by Spirit-filled revival and visions of Christian supremacy.
Taylor's unprecedented access to the movement's leaders, archives, internal conference calls, and correspondence gives us an insider account of the connection between charismatic evangelicalism and hard-right rhetoric. Taylor delves into prophetic memes like the Seven Mountains Mandate, the Appeal to Heaven flag, and the Cyrus Anointing; Trump's spiritual advisor Paula White's call for "angelic reinforcements"; and Sean Feucht and Bethel Music's titanic command of worship styles across America. Throughout, Taylor maps a movement of magnetic leaders and their uncompromising beliefs--and where it might be headed next. When people long to conquer a nation for God, democracy can be brought to the brink.
About Professor Taylor:
Matthew D. Taylor is a senior scholar at the Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies in Baltimore, where he specializes in Evangelical and Pentecostal movements, religious politics in the US, Muslim-Christian dialogue, and American Islam. He holds a PhD in Religious Studies from Georgetown University and an MA in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. His first book, Scripture People: Salafi Muslims in Evangelical Christians America (Cambridge University Press, 2023), offers an introduction to the oft-misunderstood Salafi movement in the U.S. by way of comparison with American Evangelicalism. Taylor's second book, The Violent Take It By Force: The Christian Movement that is Threatening Our Democracy (Broadleaf, 2024) tracks the growth of the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) movement and shows how the NAR leaders became the vanguard of Christian supporters of Donald Trump, even playing a direct role in the January 6 Capitol Riot.

Additional Translations ...snip...https://biblehub.com/matthew/11-12.htm
Not all phrases are easy to translate into other languages. This verse represents a difficult concept to understand, and commentators offer several possible explanations of what Jesus meant. He has just said that John is the greatest person ever born, but that the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he is (Matthew 11:11).
The key phrase here, in the original Greek, is hē basileia tōn ouranōn biazetai, kai biastai harpazousin autēn. Most English translations follow the pattern of the ESV: "the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force." Other translations, such as the NLT, render this as "the Kingdom of Heaven has been forcefully advancing, and violent people are attacking it." The NASB adds some subtlety by noting, in footnotes, that these phrases can also be translated "is forcibly entered," and "seize it for themselves," respectively.
Jesus' reference to the days of John the Baptist likely means the time of John's ministry before he was imprisoned (Matthew 4:12). "Now," in this context, would then mean that moment in Jesus' ministry of introducing the kingdom of heaven.
The most direct meaning of these words seems to be that when Jesus began His public ministry, the kingdom of heaven was beginning on earth in the form of Jesus and His followers. But great opposition has risen up against heaven's kingdom in the form of men like Herodwho imprisoned John the Baptistand the Jewish religious leaders.
Another possible meaning is that Jesus is speaking about the perversion of truth committed by His critics and opponents. In other words, a right understanding of the kingdom had been attacked. People had the wrong idea about what the kingdom of heaven really was. That's why John the Baptist asked if Jesus was really the Messiah. In that sense, then, Jesus would be saying that violent men are insisting the kingdom must be a political kingdom that begins by overthrowing the Romans. Jesus did not come to earth to do that.

Essay
The Framing of a Movement: Defining the New Apostolic Reformation
Evan P. Pietsch, R. Vivian Pietsch
Tuesday, May 21st 2024
As we seek in this essay to define the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) and the extent of its influence, we must first emphasize that the movement isnt a denomination or federation or even a parachurch organization. You will never drive by a sign that reads, New Apostolic Reformational Church of Snoqualmie Falls. This invisibility is a large part of its threat. But in this essay, we will not focus on critique but definition. It is vital to define this movement because it is a theologically troubling system of functional norms, beliefs, and leadership networks that over the past few decades has made significant inroads into many evangelical churches in the United States and abroad. We hope that defining the movements characteristic features will help both church leaders and members to recognize the threat and guard against it.

Metaphorical
(2,329 posts)Yet faith is also, nearly by definition, the lack of active questioning of one's beliefs. To have faith means that you have conviction that your beliefs are correct. In some cases, that belief may be warranted - you have gained skills and experiences that let you understand a given domain, and that in turn gives you more confidence in your own abilities. Even in matters theological, there are many well known people that have internally reconciled the contradictions between their beliefs and their experiences. I cannot see gravity, but I can see its effects, and I can create a reasonable world view on the notion that gravity exists (if you had spent your entire life in space, of course, you may have a very different set of experiences).
Yet in most cases (and for most people), you inherit your religious beliefs, although your faith in those beliefs will likely vary considerably over time. For people who don't gain experiences, who stay within their same circles and do not interact with those outside of their belief system, that faith may very well be strong. In Christianity (and to a certain extent in Islam and Judaism), questioning of beliefs becomes a form of test, and if you fail, then you are considered apostate and reviled, because those who control the faith do NOT want people questioning it and finding, not only its inconsistencies, but also the moral value of the beliefs themselves.
What Trump has done is what most charismatic leaders do - he has harnessed the desire to have strong convictions, to have a fundamental sense of certainty, into worship for him. His followers, his disciples, believe that he can do no wrong, and that any slur against him, any stain on his character, is the result not of his own particularly odious behavior but the malicious acts of others. They literally don't see the inherent contraditions between Christianity and Trump, because they have been trained not to think about either, but only to have faith.
I've frequently heard the term disillusionment and think it is especially appropriate here. Disillusionment means that you no longer believe the illusion. It often has a negative connotation because Western culture has its own faith-based mechanisms, and those who promulgate it don't want you to look too closely at the man behind the curtain either. This is one of the reasons why humour, satire, and ridicule are such potent weapons against unwarranted faith - they make you question assumptions, make you look at things from a different context. I've noticed that Trump, for all that he smiles all the time, has no sense of humour. He fears it when applied to himself, which is why when he attacks others with it, its not really funny or insightful, but intended instead to belittle others, because when he's doing that, people are not looking closely at his own motives.

last in America. I have come to the conclusion that while it's possible to be the adherent of a religion, and
accept the stories/mythology as a teaching metaphor, the tendency of not-so-smart people is to accept it as
ontologically (real). Once they accept this absurd first proposition (there is a sky daddy that watches over and loves them), they are primed to accept increasingly ridiculous ones.

Our Father high in heaven
Smile down upon your son
Who's busy with his money games
Or his women and his gun
Oh, Jesus save me
And the unsung western hero
He killed an Indian or three
And then he made his name in Hollywood
To set the white man free
Oh, Jesus save me
If Jesus saves, well, he better save himself
From the gory glory seekers who use his name in death, aw!
Oh, Jesus save me
If Jesus saves, well, he better save himself
From the gory glory seekers who use his name in death
Oh, Jesus save me
Well, I saw him in the city
And on the mountains of the moon, hey
His cross was rather bloody, oh
And he could hardly roll his stone
Oh, Jesus save me

...there are 7,000 of us who have not read the Trump "Bible" (not the borrowed, unread, one that he held upside down in front of St. John's Church, but the ones he is hawking for $60 a pop-and if he wins the price will go up as he has them made in China and he will put tariffs on China).

No wonder some Christians wonder why their numbers keep dropping. When so many of these so-called Christians are misled (despite the message from God and Jesus to avoid these fake prophets and proclaimers), people lose their faith in these so called Churches of faith, being such that they truly aren't centers of biblical learning.

(1,907 posts)This is about power.
Who holds power. Who will be below those who hold power.
The shifting of demographics combined with the rise of fanaticism here and elsewhere is too much for the brain of far too many people. Whether it is fear of real or imagined status, fear of the shuddering of capitalism, fear of the other is not irrelevant but it is important to understand that those who are afraid very likely cannot be convinced of anything but their fear and hope of retribution.
They. Are. Dangerous.

Great God Almighty how can he be ripping little children from their parents arms at the border?
Jesus Christ! How in hell can he get away with that?

(4,063 posts)I confess to having a lot of anxiety about the upcoming elections, but I'm not even remotely at this level:
"Freitag refused to contemplate what would happen if Trump loses to Vice President Kamala Harris: I dont even want to go there, she said.
From the One Million Women march of yesterday:
Sandi Woskie, another member of the Minnesota contingent, overheard the comment. She leaned in and said: Think Armageddon.
Thats right, Freitag said. If we dont turn this nation back to the Lord, were on a fast slide into the abyss with no return."

(746 posts)First your group steals another religion's holy books, (the old testament,) by incorporating their books into your "bible". Then you say that the new testament, your new and "improved" holy book, supersedes their holy texts, but you pick and choose which parts of their holy books fit your agenda and say that is good--the word of God. Then all through history you seek to annihilate this religious group because you can blame them for whatever you choose to suit your agenda. Millions of their people are killed over the years as scapegoats for whatever reason. Then many, many years later, on the holiest of their holidays, (Yom Kippur, the day of Atonement October 12, 2024), you decide to steal one of their beloved heroes to shore up your depraved, vile, self-proclaimed orange Messiah. You know, the guy that has railed against this particular religion to the point that many people are afraid that they will be targeted.
Maybe this is giving the evangelicals too much credit, but I find the date of this march truly evil--co-opting this group's holiest of holidays, Yom Kippur. I also find the hero they have chosen, a woman, to be not only ironic, but upsetting. The evangelical religion has targeted women forever, but now when it suits their purpose, they hold up this woman who saved the very people their orange Messiah has railed against! I probably sound a little unhinged, but having grown up in an evangelical family and having listened to their targeted sermons over the years for whatever disturbed reasoning they concoct, (the LGBTQ community, different ethnic groups, different religions, etc.)--I wouldn't put anything past them. They are trying to find groups to use as a scapegoats to draw attention from Trump's crimes. They don't care who gets hurt as long they achieve their own agenda--"christian" nationalism.
To the members of the Jewish religion on this board, I am so sorry. If there is ever anything I can do to help any of you, please let me know. Please stay safe. You are in my thoughts.

As far as I know, the abstract concept that some call God has a strictly 'hands off' policy when it comes to human affairs.

(20,690 posts)"Lou Engle, the self-described prophet who organized the event, said God told him in a dream to call on a million women to march on Washington in order to restore Gods dominion over the nation. Engle is a leader in the New Apostolic Reformation, a movement of charismatic Christians who for years have portrayed U.S. politics as a spiritual clash between good and evil and Trump as a flawed leader anointed by God to redeem the nation."
Most Christians, thankfully, are not like this self-appointed "prophet".
