Steve Bannon asks appeals court to allow him to remain out of prison while he fights contempt of Congress conviction

Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon asked a federal appeals court Tuesday to let him remain out of prison while he continues to appeal a nearly two-year-old conviction on criminal contempt of Congress charges. Bannon filed an emergency motion Tuesday evening asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to overrule a lower courts order last week that he report to prison for four months on July 1.
Bannon is asking the D.C. Circuit to quickly rule on his motion by next Tuesday to allow him time if necessary to appeal to the Supreme Court over his conviction on two counts of contempt of Congress in 2022, after he refused to answer questions from the House Jan. 6 committee.
Bannon's attorney argued in Tuesday's filing that his imprisonment would block him from acting as a "meaningful adviser" in the campaign leading up to the November election.
"The government seeks to imprison Mr. Bannon for the four-month period leading up to the November election, when millions of Americans look to him for information on important campaign issues," wrote Trent McCotter, a new addition to Bannons legal team. "This would also effectively bar Mr. Bannon from serving as a meaningful advisor in the ongoing national campaign.

(39,651 posts)Even this miserable SCOTUS has recognized the legitimacy of the J6 Committee and their ability to call witnesses & subpoena documents.
His appeal doesn't stand a chance.
It's likely SCOTUS will refuse to hear it.

(32,314 posts)I hope judge Merchan is listening. TSF is not only hanging around with criminals, one is his advisor. That fact should be held against TSF when deciding on his sentence.
What the fuck kind of appeal is Bannon actually filing? He wants his going to jail stayed so he can do more appeals, well doesn't Bannon have to specify what the appeal is? It shouldn't be good enough to say he can't go to prison because he broadcasts lies to get TSF elected, a criminal who pardoned Bannon.
What are the grounds for a stay?

(1,976 posts)So if he can delay long enough he skates.
I think a lot of the delays on all of Trumps trials is basically for the same thing.

(71,919 posts)... new to say. No one on the right really gives a poop. Navaro couldn't beat it and Bannon isn't going to either. He'll be in jail during the campaign and election. He should just go and play martyr when he gets out, a few weeks after the election.

(8,103 posts)like a valid reason to avoid the start of his sentence. There must be thousands of criminals who have excuses just like his, only much more critical. You know, only bread winner, ill child, momma's gonna miss me, wife gonna cheat...
I like the upthread comment about Trump not being able to associate with another felon. So true! He's already been out through appeal. Nice try, but he should report July 1 as ordered.

I doubt he's paying millions to lawyers to "fight" his case.
Lock him up! It's long overdue!
