US drug control agency will move to reclassify marijuana in a historic shift, AP sources say

Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will move to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, The Associated Press has learned, a historic shift to generations of American drug policy that could have wide ripple-effects across the country.

The DEA’s proposal, which still must be reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget, would recognize the medical uses of cannabis and acknowledge it has less potential for abuse than some of the nation’s most dangerous drugs. However, it would not legalize marijuana outright for recreational use.

The agency’s move, confirmed to the AP on Tuesday by five people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive regulatory review, clears the last significant regulatory hurdle before the agency’s biggest policy change in over 50 years can take effect.

Once OMB signs off, the DEA will take public comment on the plan to move marijuana from its current classification as a Schedule I drug, alongside heroin and LSD. It moves pot to Schedule III, alongside ketamine and some anabolic steroids, following a recommendation from the federal Health and Human Services Department. After the public-comment period the agency would publish the final rule.

"Granny, our generation is going to legalize marijuana". I told him that I hoped he was right, but my generation thought we were going to legalize it 50 years ago.

Except everyone I know who uses it wishes they could use less.
As long as it’s regulated like cigarettes and I don’t have to suffer the stink on peoples clothes or breath or their second hand smoke, I’m ok with it. But I recommend that half the taxes collected from it be earmarked for addiction services.

Cannabis shouldn’t be on their stinking schedule at all, but here we are. When we elected Jared Polis as our congressman so many years ago, he introduced a bill every year to reschedule cannabis. Never could get it done. Now he’s our governor.

There is a vast industry addicted to keeping pot "maximus illegal". Career Agents in DEA and 50 states. Surveillance against growers.... local cops "I smell marijuana, get out of your vehicle..."

This huge investment in "Reefer Madness" will take years to dismantle. Police unions are already objecting and filing suits to stop the DEA rescheduling. It's a threat to their livelihood.

and ruining their lives for smoking a joint now and then.

Just legalize it, assholes. Yes, not everybody can tolerate it and yes, it's not 100% harm free for all people, but it is the closest ting to a benign intoxicant we have. In addition, people who can get stoned tend to have less interest in things like opiates, opiate abuse falls, and with that, the number of fentanyl ODs will drop. It has happened that way in states that legalized cannabis for recreational use.

So back off and just legalize it. Oh, and while you are at it, stop harassing doctors and patients in pain. That will free up thousands of agents to work on interdiction of fentanyl and methamphetamine at the border. Get it?

Otherwise, at best it is a prescription-only "medication", and still illegal at a federal level for recreational use.

The laws were used unfairly by cops against blacks and other minorities for 100 years. Meanwhile the white kids from "nice" families were getting off with a light fine, or sometimes not even that much. Cops used the marijuana laws as a reason to stop and inspect the cars of black drivers. Then it's "Oh, looky here, see what I found!" Evidence could be easily planted by cops if they didn't actually find it there.

This shit has to end. Yes some drugs are dangerous and should remain illegal, they enable an underclass of dealers and distributors. But marijuana is a plant that grows wild in the USA, or it used to. Tobacco causes more deaths than marijuana, so why isn't tobacco illegal?

Some of the usual rules: 6 months prescription at a time, with 5 refills, being the big one. Can have it filled every 30 days.

Waiting for the ruling so I can have my GP write the scrip.

I like how the DEA is going to recognize the medical uses of pot in this report. My husband and I are in Michigan and have arthritis. We appreciate being able to buy gummy’s from our local pot shop. Hopefully this step will inspire more states to legalize.

marihuana and make policy recommendations to the government. They conducted a thorough scientific, and sociological study of marihuana use and its effects which included subjects in Jamaica who had been smoking copious amounts of marihuana daily for decades. The commission recommended the decriminalization of the drug but Nixon ignored the findings, and marihuana was classified as a Schedule I drug.

Tobacco, alcohol, and even refined sugar are more dangerous, and have a much higher public cost than cannabis.
