Biden pick Choudhury becomes first Muslim woman confirmed as federal judge

Nusrat Jahan Choudhury, President Biden’s pick for a federal judgeship in New York, was confirmed Thursday by the Senate, making her the first Muslim woman on the federal bench.

Choudhury, who is also the first Bangladeshi American confirmed to a federal judgeship, will serve the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn.

She was confirmed in a 50-49 vote, with Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.) the only Democrat to vote against her confirmation.

Before being nominated to the bench by Biden in January 2022, Choudhury spent her entire legal career with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). She was most recently the legal director of the ACLU of Illinois.

BREAKING: President Biden scores a major win for diversity and deals a powerful blow to Republican bigots as the U.S. Senate confirms the first female Muslim federal judge in American history.

Civil rights lawyer Nusrat Choudhury was nominated to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York by President Biden in January 2022.

Prior to her nomination, Choudhury spent much of her career working for the ACLU on racial justice and national security issues.

In addition to being the first Muslim woman to serve as a federal judge, she is also the first Bangladeshi-American.

Not surprisingly, racist Republicans in the Senate united to oppose her confirmation. The final vote came out 50-49.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer praised Choudhury's "experience as a talented and dedicated civil rights litigator has prepared her to serve with integrity and professionalism on the federal bench, and she will follow the facts and administer justice with fairness and a deep respect for the rule of law."

This confirmation is a major win for democracy and a potent reminder that elections matter. Just imagine what kind of white nationalist, right-wing psychopath Donald Trump would have nominated to fill this seat.
