McCarthy demands work requirements on all the programs including Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP

..........McCarthy also claimed that forcing people who may not be physically or emotionally able to work, or who may have responsibilities that preclude them from leaving the house to go to a job "helps the supply chain."
What the Speaker is ignoring are the millions of undocumented immigrants currently within our borders desperate to work at jobs that won't threaten their ability to stay in the country not to mention the thousands of others coming to the U.S. seeking asylum or a way out of poverty, gangs, drugs, disease, and corruption........
.............Despite McCarthy's apparent implication that Americans accessing social safety net benefits are not currently working, in fact many who are, do.
Earlier this year the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities published a state-by-state report that also finds nationally, more than 41% of SNAP recipients are in working families................

(55,137 posts)work each day as the fame POTUS? I think it was 2-3 hours a day, at the most. He spent more time tweeting and trying to hide his lack of hair each day than he ever did "working" in DC. The party of Grand Old Hypocrites.

(80,808 posts)There was no money to provide care for her and a nursing home was too expensive. She needed Medicaid and some food stamps. When I quit work she was 85 and just died a few months ago. She was a strong women-actually moved about the house with her walker until the last week. McCarthy is a cruel man. Simple as that.

(8,909 posts)snap benefits and emegency medicaid are being discussed though.
If They force work requirements for food stamps (snap, supplemental nutrition assistance program)
which I hope they do not, surely more folks will show up and vote the rethugs out in the next election.

(7,794 posts)I wonder how many people don't know the difference between the concept of a "social safety net" and the actual concrete fact of "The US Social Security Administration." I'm afraid the answer to that question will be an eye-opener and such a title does nothing but further confuse the issue.

(13,538 posts)Not people with kids at home or anyone disabled.
But why not require it for single people who are able?
But these SYSTEMS also need changing. Section 8 housing assistance is rigged to give NO incentive to work more or make more money. If you make $50 more one month they'll take away $50 from your subsidy the next month. Thats BS. Maybe take away $1 for every 3-4 extra you make. Otherwise, why bother? And they stay stuck.
Not sure if SNAP does the same but it wouldn't surprise me

(3,560 posts)The work requirements thing is a moneymaker for for-profit companies, not government entities. Its a complete scam. These outfits arent out to help the beneficiaries of the social programs. They exist only to make a buck off of the backs of the people they allegedly help and us taxpayers.
The head of the biggest and oldest company (started with the original work requirements with Welfare Reform 1.0 in 1994), made $6 million last year and according to the clip of his first quarter earnings conference call Marketplace played, he sees massive growth potential in Welfare Reform 2.0. Which simply means massive growth in his compensation and stock price
and ripping off of US taxpayers. Wouldnt the money those companies get paid be better utilized going directly to program beneficiaries? 🤬
Fuck McQarthy.

Beachnutt
(8,909 posts)in that article either, Social safety program is not social security, it's food stamps, medicare, section 8 housing etc..
If they did cut that the able bodied magaloons wouldn't have time or means to attend rallies...
I don't want this to happen as it is proven to help families.

(7,794 posts)There's something wrong when we quote the titles of articles when the article doesn't agree with the title. It's called misinformation and when it's repeated it's called propaganda.

If wages kept pace w/ productivity, the minimum wage would be over $20/hr!
If wages were higher, tax collections would be too!

(6,115 posts)One word: inequality.
Other countries with strong social support do not have the kind of violence we have. They take care of their citizens. People here get desperate, can't pay for medical care, can't provide for their families.
And republicans want to make it worse, always.
For as long as I live, I will never understand how people vote for these motherfuckers and vote against their own self-interest every goddamn time.

(6,267 posts)The Welfare-to Work-Industrial Complex on The Uncertain Hour podcast. Episodes 5 and 6 need to be heard by everyone and shouted from the rooftops. McCarthys corruptly serving these companies that literally refer to people on welfare as their product. Maximus CEO admitted it might sound bad but thats just the fact.

(987 posts)Do you know how much money it would cost to monitor work requirements? Does he think those employees at social security have the hours in the day to add that to they're plate? Their inability to govern has caused the perfect storm at social security. There won't be anyone left to manage benefits. They are losing 1000 employees a month. No one wants to work the jobs. They have become too difficult to learn and the workload is unsustainable. Good grief.

(13,479 posts)women the economic assistance needed to feed those children. When you have too many children, you cant work because someone has to take care of them and paid child care is often unaffordable even for families with decent paying jobs. It oh so pro life to force more poor kids into the world and then refuse to feed them.

(23,227 posts)McCarthy did not specify Medicare or SS- that is rawstorys assumption, not a direct quote.
He did say all the programs in the context of means tested programs such as Medicaid and SNAP.
SS and Medicare are not means tested.

(23,175 posts)Most of the people I know who get social security are using their time to help others. for free. Babysitting, petsitting, driving, tending. Some get low-paying jobs to augment their s.s. Actually, my group of friends are so busy, we have trouble meeting up for lunch once in awhile because we are all so busy. ass will never understand that the dynamics in many families employ the elderly, the infirm, or the young to cover what needs to be done. The r's who think we are not contributing need to get off their asses and do their jobs, instead of acting like winning an election is the culmination of their effort and they can sit on their asses and rake in tax dollars as their reward. Like that isn't entitlement? They should be paid by the hour, and be on a time clock.
