Nikki Haley to make antiabortion pitch with eye on swing voters

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by JudyM (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: Washington Post

Former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley is seeking to differentiate herself from her GOP presidential rivals on the issue of abortion, stepping forward as a Republican urging her party to grapple now with the political challenge it faces after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Her pitch: Messenger and tone matter.

Haley is set to deliver a speech on abortion Tuesday at the headquarters of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America in Northern Virginia, aiming to put her stamp on the issue as an unapologetic antiabortion voice who can nonetheless win back moderate voters who were alienated by other Republican candidates in the 2022 midterm elections. Her speech comes as Republican-led states have moved to restrict abortion access and the courts battle over access to a drug for medication-induced abortions.

The focus of the speech, according to a person briefed on the details, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss them on the record, will be less about policy details — including the number of weeks in state bans, the exact federal role or the terms of exceptions for rape, incest and life of the mother. Rather, the person said, Haley wants to change the way abortion is discussed, returning to the less aggressive strategy adopted by the antiabortion movement in the late 1990s.

“Republicans won’t win the hearts and minds of Americans unless they’re able to address difficult and personal issues with compassion while sticking to our principles,” Haley campaign communications director Nachama Soloveichik said in a statement. “Nikki Haley is the only presidential candidate who demonstrates an ability to talk about abortion in a way that appeals to the swing voters Republicans need to win the general election.”

You either believe a woman has the right to control her body or you believe something else. It’s really that simple.

Are there even any swing voters who are anti abortion? It seems to me that anyone who doesn't think a woman has a right to make her own health choices is not a "swing voter".....

"an unapologetic antiabortion voice who can nonetheless win back moderate voters who were alienated by other Republican candidates in the 2022 midterm elections."

So, Haley thinks we're stupid, and that she can somehow convince us that anti-abortion is not really anti-abortion.

Before the convention: positions on abortion range from "nationwide ban except in cases of rape, incest, fetal abnormality or threat to life or health of the mother" to "abortion will be banned nationwide with no exceptions" to "anyone who gets an abortion automatically goes to prison for fifty years, and the doctor will be executed by guillotine in the public square" to...well, I'm sure they can come up with something worse.

At the convention: "The official Republican Party platform on abortion, transgenderism, homosexuality, ever having voted for a Democrat, not owning five Bibles, being a drag queen, practicing any religion but Christianity, drinking Bud Light, smoking marijuana, wokeism or anything else we don't like is that the criminal will buy a pistol, stand in front of his or her local Republican Party Headquarters and shoot him- or herself in the head with it, after which the family of the criminal will lose all their worldly goods. Further, the Constitutional prohibition on ex post facto laws will be suspended so that any man who ever went to a Halloween party wearing lip gloss can be suitably punished because, after all, we must purge the evil from our society for all time."

The day after the election, when the House breaks 435-0 Democratic and Joe Biden takes all fifty states in the presidential contest: "What can we possibly do to win over undecided voters? I know! We didn't make the penalty stiff enough! Next time, we'll require them to shoot themselves in the head with a 12-gauge shotgun!"
