Ethics watchdog files against Thomas following reports on trips, real estate deal

Source: The Hill

An ethics watchdog nonprofit organization filed a civil and criminal complaint against Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas following reports that he did not disclose gifts he received and a real estate deal he made with a major Republican donor years ago.

Citizens for Responsibility & Ethics in Washington (CREW) said in a release on Friday that the Justice Department (DOJ) and Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts should launch investigations into Thomas over lavish trips he received over a period of years that were paid for by Harlan Crow, a Dallas-based real estate developer, and detailed in a ProPublica report last week.

The organization said the DOJ and Roberts should also investigate a 2014 real estate deal in which he reportedly sold a single-story home and two vacant lots to Crow.

Thomas received the trips and made the sale without disclosing them on federal financial reporting forms.

Poorly written headline and reporting. An ethics watchdog released a statement and sent a letter urging the DOJ and the Supreme Court to launch an investigation. That and 50 cents will get you a cup of coffee.

A private group can't file a criminal or civil complaint, only the authorities can do so. They could certainly start a civil lawsuit but it would go nowhere as they have no standing and there were no damages. Very poor reporting and headline.

Not holding my breath that either Merrick Garland or John Roberts will do bupkis about Thomas's apparent ethical breaches.

So this all is nothing more than an unarmed cop saying to the thief running away: "Stop! Or I'll say stop again!"

and they don’t have the spine to indict him.

Let’s be realistic.

We have as much chance of holding Thomas accountable as we do expanding the Court to 13-15 justices.

The time to have stopped Thomas was back on Sept 27th, 1991, when Joe Biden voted with all the Democrats on the Judiciary Committee (except Paul Simon) to send Thomas’ nomination to the senate for a full vote, which he won 52-48.

No, some of us haven’t forgotten that little bit of history.

And Joe's refusal to allow testimony from other victims whom Thomas sexually harassed.

He's doing a great job as president but I have not forgotten his shitty behavior during the confirmation hearings.

Congressional committees need to investigate and apply so much pressure to Ginni that it will force Clarence to resign in order to avoid the prosecution of his wife.

Where have you been these last few years? Republicans have NO shame. The fact that Thomas used to report these gifts years ago and then stopped tells you everything you need to know about him - he thinks he is above the law. Indeed, he's been getting away with this shit for two decades, so he really is above the law.

It won't matter if they investigate his corrupt wife and find all sorts of illegality. He has no shame. He thinks he's invincible. And so far, he IS invincible. Why would anyone expect that to change?
