EU warns Musk that Twitter faces ban over content moderation

Source: Financial Times

Thierry Breton, the EU's commissioner in charge of implementing the bloc's digital rules, made the threat during a video meeting with Musk on Wednesday, according to people with knowledge of the conversation.

Breton told Musk he must adhere to a checklist of rules, including ditching an "arbitrary" approach to reinstating banned users, pursuing disinformation "aggressively" and agreeing to an "extensive independent audit" of the platform by next year.

Among the EU's demands is that Musk provides clear criteria on which users are at risk of being banned. Musk has reinstated Donald Trump's account after holding a poll of users on whether the former US president should be allowed to return to the site.

Breton also called on Musk to also apply strict rules when it comes to advertising, including a ban on targeting children or users based on sensitive information, including religious and political beliefs. These measures are in line with the EU's new digital rules that will be applied from the start of next year.

Musk has already tweeted about plans for Twitter to do more targeted advertising, especially with accounts paying for the blue checkmarks (fewer total ads for them, but more targeted). And the RW groups who'll want to advertise on Twitter will want the kind of sensitive info those EU rules will block Musk from giving them.

people at Twitter who understand and comply with those regulations.

Naaahh...who am I kidding? Elon and his galaxy-sized brain can deal with all that while designing a rocket, a car, a hyperloop, and fathering a couple of bastards all at the same time!

They obviously have different rules regarding free speech than the US, but I've always been of the opinion that outright lies which are apt to cause harm shouldn't be protected speech.

since depriving him of nearly a billion potential suckers might be just the thing to shake him out of his libertarian fantasy world. A solid kick to the wallet is what these guys need. It's the only place they ever feel pain.

5. It's been observed that Musk seems to assume he's working in a US communication space.

Given the international scope of his other operations, this looks like a surprisingly blinkered view with regard to Twitter. You can cite the First Amendment all you like, but it doesn't hold any sway outside the USA, and other countries have their own approaches to safeguarding and regulating free speech (and Musk seems to have few problems pandering to China's views on material that runs counter to the state's interests, among others) and data protection.

The EU regulations are backed up by individual countries' regulations on aspects like hate speech - in Germany in particular. This should be no surprise to anybody, and these are the spaces Twitter's had to operate in all along. But Musk sacked personnel who had experience of this, so *Big Surprise* ...

A public, global forum for sharing information in real time. One of the most valuable communication platforms in history.
Elon buying it and subsequently destroying it is all part of the plan. It's almost like watching a controlled demolition.

Kinda makes you wonder if there is some planned future event(s) that they don't want Twitter around for...

of them suggesting Musk just "buy" the EU (as they think he can just buy Apple or any other company). Or suggesting that the US should nuke Europe.

I saw lots of tweets from Musk fans declaring they would be "soldiers" for him when he declared war on Apple a couple of days ago.

Idiots. All of them.
