Belarus shuts borders: Citizens barred from leaving and foreigners must provide documents
BELARUS has shut its border and prevented people from leaving the country as tensions escalate on the continent.

Border force has imposed strict restrictions on travel by Belarusian citizens and foreign nationals with a residential permit in Belarus. Those with a temporary residence card in another country are not allowed to leave.
A temporary residence permit in a foreign state is not a basis for leaving Belarus, the State Border Committee said.
It added departure from the country through ground checkpoints is limited for both Belarusian citizens and foreigners with a residence permit in Belarus.

(13,365 posts)Does the murderous dictator Lukashenko isolate his country like Kim Jong-un's N Korea and starve them, while the world sits outside his border and laughs at him and mocks his behavior?
And for how long, and when does he cave and release the reporter who is probably already being fed polonium soup?

The lockdown is really shocking.

(114,614 posts)and I sincerely doubt even Putin can save him now. He's become an embarrassment and a danger.
Soldiers have families, and they're all going to get an earful about the clampdown. They also know how to throw revolutions in central Europe, I'll refer you to the Ukrainian uprising of some years ago. I don't fancy Lukashenko's chances of longevity in office.
Maybe he can retire to a nice country house on the Ukrainian border, tucked away in the exclusion zone.

(12,336 posts)Lockdowns are NOT a good thing. They're obviously necessary in pandemics. But let's not praise them unreservedly.
I've lived through 2 hard lockdowns in the UK since October and it was utter, utter shit. We don't need authoritarians preventing people from leaving their countries without a serious reason to do so.

(24 posts)Haven't been able to leave the country for over a year. Same as Belarus

(24 posts)Madman as in those that authorise lockdown?

(12,336 posts)Or do you really not follow the news? Or any of the other posts in this thread. It's not about lockdown. Lockdown is FINE for pandemic type things or other major national emergencies (see any human rights law treaty). Lockdown is not fine as a way to clamp down on dissidents.
This. Isn't. About. Covid.
Radical Ant
(24 posts)but the Govt says this exactly the reason.

No different to other Western countries like Australia
Dont get me wrong. I dont think Lukashenko is the good guy in all this. Hell no. Workers rights are being smashed left right and centre. Bosses now can fire workers anytime without warning or reasons. Issues you wont hear about on CNN.
You're not saying that Svetlana Tikhonovskaya is a good in all this ? Or are you?

Maybe rather than North Korea, Belarus is becoming the new East Germany?
