California economy still staggering from COVID-19 shutdowns. And things could worsen

Source: Sacramento Bee

California’s economy continues to struggle through the COVID-19 pandemic, enduring business shutdowns ordered by Gov. Gavin Newsom and embarrassing defections to Texas by some bright lights of Silicon Valley. On Friday, the Employment Development Department released the latest snapshot of the state’s economy: California’s unemployment rate fell eight-tenths of a point in November, to 8.2%.

However, job growth totaled just 57,100, a little more than one-third as many jobs as were created a month earlier, signaling a slowdown in the recovery. What’s more, the November figures don’t reflect the recent havoc inflicted on the economy. In early December, Newsom ordered new restrictions as coronavirus infections spiked and beds filled up rapidly in hospital intensive care units. His order meant the closure of barbershops and nail salons, further restricted capacity at shopping malls and reduced restaurants to takeout service, among other things.

“This is the calm before the storm,” said Sung Won Sohn, professor of finance and economics at Loyola Marymount University. November’s decline in the unemployment rate also was misleading, Sohn said, because it partly reflects that 627,000 Californians have dropped out of the job market since February because “the job outlook is so poor.” People who’ve halted their job search to go back to school, or stay home with their children, aren’t counted as unemployed.

All told, California has recaptured just 46% of the 2.6 million jobs that vanished in the first two months of the pandemic, the EDD said.

1. Unfortunately, California has moved up to #3 highest daily new cases Per Capita

just behind Tennessee and Rhode Island

and their case numbers are still going straight up
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/california-coronavirus-cases.html

On Edit: I thought California had this all under control, with restrictions that phase in and out according to the metrics and by locality, sounded pretty good and until about a month ago had long been way below the U.S. average in new cases Per Capita.

So it's disappointing to see California blow up. And on top of that my sister and her family and family's families live in California (San Diego County). For a long time Minnesota and Hennepin County (MN) was way worse than California in Per Capita new cases, now CA is considerably worse. Just amazes me how these things can change so quickly (I know it shouldn't but it does).

People thought it was more important to play on the beaches than stop the spread of Covid.

really suffering. This is where I really have a problem with both the state and LA county shutting down outdoor dining, salon businesses, etc., while all the stores are still open. It's spreading here through close indoor contact. My wife and I know too many people personally, who go to parties, have extended family get-togethers, etc. A friend of mine in OC constantly posts pictures of houses down the street where people are having parties. Secret party clubs are having warehouse parties. There are a number of churches here with people attending indoors.

If anything, closing outdoor dining is not only walloping local businesses, but it's also having the opposite effect of pushing people to gather more indoors because there's nothing else to do.

throughout the pandemic. The "we must have bars and beaches open, you are hurting our freedumb and you are taking away our rights to be sadistic murderers" BS. These freedumb seeking, self absorbed and stupid protesters were in Sacramento, Hunt. Beach, Pacific Beach, etc. Two reasons for the increase...
1. Self absorbed, sadistic morons have had a lot of mini protests supported by greedy business owners since last May.
2. Local govt. are changing Newsom's order and are opening their gyms, bars, restaurants, etc despite his latest order and yesterday a judge agreed with the self absorbed murderous morons and their right to kill whoever they can as long as they have their "freedums?". Just as stupid as the cult giving $$$ millions to somehow get the votes to overturn the election.

Sadistic, immature, greedy bastards exist all over, especially in CA.

their attitudes won't change. Very tired of the open-uppers. Talked with a very religious friend in late summer, and she was ho-hum, if it gets me, there's nothing I can do about it. Well you don't have to tempt fate, I said. Yes, but I don't look at it that way, if God says it's my time, it's my time. We have to have things open, my kids want to go out, people need income. We talk a couple times a year, and I've not had any replies this holiday season, so I'm thinking her time came. Very sad the obtuseness of Americans.

And yet its spread is increasing, even in New York. Don't get locked in to todays understanding of this virus because it might be more complicated than that. Again, there may be no simple solution and people need to prepare for that.
