GOP legislator prays to Jesus for forgiveness before state's first Muslim woman swears in
Source: Washington Post

State Rep. Stephanie Borowicz was on the ninth Jesus of her opening prayer in the Pennsylvania statehouse when other lawmakers started to look uncomfortable.
Speaker Mike Turzai, her fellow Republican, glanced up but Borowicz carried on, delivering a 100-second ceremonial invocation that some of her colleagues decried as an offensive, divisive and Islamophobic display shortly before the legislature swore in its first Muslim woman.
God forgive us Jesus weve lost sight of you, weve forgotten you, God, in our country, and were asking you to forgive us, Borowicz said, followed by a quote from the Bibles second book of Chronicles that implores Gods followers to turn from their wicked ways. Then she praised President Trump for his unequivocal support of Israel.
I claim all these things in the powerful, mighty name of Jesus, the one who, at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess, Jesus, that you are Lord, in Jesus name, Borowicz said.

(8,200 posts)The progress of our county has been slow and often some serious problems were allowed to develop until confronted. The Republican Party long ago sold its soul to the extremists in desperation to gain offices. Unfortunately, its people who are often the victims that have provided them with their support. They are the suckers that are born every minute that are just waiting to be fleeced. Often it is their own failures that have contributed to their plight and in desperation the are willing to support the most vicious of demagogues. Its not their fault that they are desperate; its always some scapegoat.
With Hitler it was the Jews; today its the Hispanics that ae taking their jobs. Jobs that in fact few Americans will only take in desperation. Many of them are in reality only surviving on social safety net programs that are keeping them alive. The very programs candidates that the support are blaming for the situation. It is more than ironic. They are telling Americans that the drug problems is the fault of the suppliers. The fact is that if the suppliers didn't have buyers they wouldn't be in the business. Having been addicted to cigarettes when smoking was glamorous and the problem of stopping, it seems to me that the solution is convincing people not to become addicts that is going to destroy them both physically and financially.
Democracies are messy and move along with fits and stops. Authoritarian governments are far less complicated. They just exterminate what the conceive as the problem. They can control immigration by just mining the border and machine gunning down anyone who wants in which has always migrated to killing those who are trying to get out. Canada had better wise up. They could be facing a massive migration of Americans in the near future if the Republican Party remains in control. This county in on the way to becoming only habitable to the wealthy and their massive economically desperate slaves.

Talking about Jesus, forgiveness are for those that deserve it. NAZIS were not forgiven, nor were they taken back within society. 20 years from now, trumpers who post their likes and poses as trumper supporters will regret it as evil beings. There needs to be a document collection of Trumpers and when the fall of the Nazis cometh upon our Nation, we need to do what the French did with Nazis! FOR NOW, all that is missing are the birds that constantly bombard their cars with white droppings!

(23 posts)Sad truth is that most evangelicals don't realize that Judaism is not that into Jesus or the Jesus freaks who are waiting for the end-times prophesies to bring about the Great Tribulation.
On the September 18, 1991 edition of the 700 Club, Sid Roth, host of Messianic Vision, stated that two-thirds of the Jewish people [living in Israel] will be exterminated during a future Great Tribulation. He bases this view on Zechariah 13:89. He argued that incidents of Blacks turning against Jews in New York City were a prelude to a coming great persecution.
At the 2012 Democratic National Convention, Mark Alan Siegel, who served as the chairman of Floridas Palm Beach County Democratic Party, told an interviewer the following about what he thought of Christian and Jewish relationships:
The Christians just want us to be there so we can be slaughtered and converted and bring on the second coming of Jesus Christ. The worst possible allies for the Jewish state are the fundamentalist Christians who want Jews to die and convert so they can bring on the second coming of their Lord. It is a false friendship. They are seeking their own ends and not ours. I dont believe the fundamentalists urging a greater Israel are friends of the Jewish state.

Coulter: We Want Jews To Be "Perfected"
The conservative commentator said this week that the nation would be better off if all Americans were Christian and that she wants "Jews to be perfected, as they say."
Appearing on the CNBC show The Big Idea, Coulter was asked to give her version of a better America. She told the show's host, Donny Deutsch, that it would look like New York City during the 2004 Republican National Convention.
Pressed for details, Coulter said, "People were happy. They're Christian. They're tolerant. They defend America ..."
"Christian ... so we should be Christian?" Deutsch interrupted. "It would be better if we were all Christian?"
Coulter answered "Yes" once, and after being asked the same question again by an obviously surprised Deutsch, answered "Yes" a second time.

(23 posts)Not really clear as to the distinction between the two in terms of acceptance by 'mainline denominations'.
Notwithstanding you are quite right in pointing out that Islam accepts the Virgin Birth of Jesus and regard him as a prophet vs the 'Son of God'.
There is however some granularity/distinction between a Virgin Birth and the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception which holds that Mary was herself conceived without the stain of 'Original Sin'.
Islam/Muslims reject the doctrine of original sin and it follows logically that there is no need for an Immaculate Conception.

God grew up, or got better, or found less reason to do all that smiting (with the notable exception of, e.g., Ananias and Sapphira in the Acts, and pretty much everyone else in Revelation). Got it.

A little over an hour in as the pastor was finishing up, another woman decided to testify. Half an hour later it was time to leave. I wrote this to make a point. I spent 1 1/2 hours in a Baptist church hearing about Jesus and I would rather do that then listen to someone like this for 100 seconds. Not on point, but, one parishioner asked the pastor why Abraham was kept from sacrificing his son but Jephthah did sacrifice his daughter? Before the pastor could answer, my friend said, "Excuse me pastor, but my friend is Jewish and could probably give this man the reason since it is in his Bible.". Nothing I like better than to explain scripture to a church full of Baptists.

Central PA is a mix of urban liberal (Harrisburg, Lancaster, etc) and suburban and rural conservative (Gettysburg, Perry Co, etc).
I am saddened to see the bigotry shown in the OP article. I am gladdened that there is an increasing diversity in our legislature. I heartily wish religion was never an issue in US politics.

(430 posts)Somehow we're blaming these idiots for their religious views, and rightfully so. However, at times I think we're losing sight of the overall problem which is they are all listening to Priests, Rabbis, Pastors, Reverends, etc. who are instilling their views in the nearly empty heads of sheep scared to die. Religion knows this and takes advantage of it. (Pick a religion and whomever's current interpretation of it)
We need to remind people the "R" after Senators, Congress and locals really stands for Racist; DJT (R-acist), Mike Pense (R-acist), etc.
Sounds like a concerted effort by religion to rule the world, and by golly, it is. Put some cash in the plate! Go to heaven! Send thoughts and prayers to the infidels! (and NRA)
The First Amendment needs re-emphasis, BIG TIME. Remind the crazies there are 27 other Amendments of which 99% can't name more than 2, misquote most and can't understand the rest because of apathetic ignorance.

(340 posts)Military Chaplaincy *used* to value quaint values such as a Constitutional right to free exercise of religion or lack of religion but in my experience, those days are long gone. Ive met (too) many Chaplains who bleat about being told I cannot pray in the name of Jesus (simply untrue, in most cases) while having a cow if they have to report to a senior Chaplain whos wait for it a WOMAN, and/or who refuse to acknowledge the validity of the practice of any spiritual path other than their own, narrowly-construed, sectarian, exclusionary beliefs. They would scream bloody murder if they had to stand in formation while a Buddhist Chaplain prayed in Thai, for example or a Muslim Chaplain prayed to Allah in Arabic. But they believe THEY MUST pray in the name of Jesus!
In my experience, many of them have only on-line coursework as their academic preparation for military ministry. In your day, every Chaplain had to have received an academic degree which assumed in-classroom courses. I came the Chaplaicy as an old fart, in my 50s, with six post-secondary academic degrees [none involved any on-line coursework] and a year of post-doctoral research in molecular virology. I never once felt the need to impose my religious views on anyone else in uniform while I served.
