Boston Red Sox Mookie Betts Says He Won't Visit White House with Team
Source: The Daily Beast
Boston Red Sox slugger Mookie Betts says he will not go to the White House with his team in May to celebrate their World Series win. Betts was asked about his plans at a dinner Saturday night where he was honored as the American League MVP, according to the Boston Globe.
"I won't be going there," Betts said. "I decided not to." The outfielder did not elaborate or explain his decision, but he is not the only Sox planning to be a no-show; Rafael Devers has also said he won't attend, telling reporters, "The opportunity was presented and I just wasn't compelled to go."
At least three other players are undecided about the visit, while other Red Sox have said they intend to make the trip. The visit was originally scheduled for next month but was postponed during the government shutdown.
"I'm not sure it's appropriate to be celebrating in such a public way while there's people who are struggling right now," Sox President Sam Kennedy said then.

Good for them and VERY good for the statement by team President Sam Kennedy! Mookie Betts is becoming a great spokeperson for the team and example for everyone. In between World Series games he was out delivering hot meals (paid for by himself) to the poor and homeless in Boston.
A better person than he is a baseball player, and he was MVP last season!

(196,492 posts)I'm not one to watch regular season baseball so I only tuned in for the playoffs. I'd seen headlines and heard about how good he was but what I saw last fall blew me away. Aside from the hitting, he made two plays in right field that were jaw dropping. One was a fly ball against the Yankees that no one would have been near let alone made the catch and he did THEN he spun and fired the ball to first trying to get the runner. The runner was safe but only by an inch. It was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen.
