Trump jokes David Lynch's career is 'over' for praising his presidency

Donald Trump has joked that David Lynchs career in Hollywood is officially over after the maverick film director suggested in a Guardian interview that Trump could go down as one of Americas greatest presidents.
Trump seized on the comment by the reclusive director of Blue Velvet, Eraserhead and Twin Peaks during a typically freewheeling, hour-long speech that ranged from North Korea and space rockets to facelifts and fake hair, yet made no mention of family separations at the southern border.
A Guardian article published on Saturday noted that Lynch, who voted for Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Democratic primary, is undecided about Trump. He could go down as one of the greatest presidents in history because he has disrupted the thing so much, he told the paper. No one is able to counter this guy in an intelligent way.
The article added that Lynch thinks while Trump may not be doing a good job himself, he is opening up a space where other outsiders might. Our so-called leaders cant take the country forward, cant get anything done. Like children, they are. Trump has shown all this.

Would that it were so. Mr Lynch is a twisted misogynist. That he should have any kind words for a twisted, misogynistic president is sadly unsurprising.

(7,952 posts)Trump has caused so much destruction that anyone who follows can only rebuild - "greatest" in the sense of "biggest influence" or "most significant". I hope Lynch isn't being an asshat and was talking backward like he enjoys doing.
Plus, Lynch has always been a weird outsider. INLAND EMPIRE was filmed on Hi-Def video cameras on his own dime with no support of the Hollywood system.
Not a very watchable or great movie IMO, but...

I'd like someone fresher to win the next primary than Bernie, but with the same solid ideals.
But I'd love to see what happens to this place if Bernie ran and won next time. The hair pulling and gnashing of teeth would be palatable......sadly.

(10,601 posts)and not Lynch's actual words, which are critical of the system that allowed someone like Trump to flourish in the first place.
He's still being a bit of an typical white, privileged male asshole about it all, but to paint Lynch as an out-and-out Trump cheerleader is misleading.

(18,842 posts)And now that the horrible 45 is ruining our country, many on this board and elsewhere need someone to blame. And that has to be Sanders in their eyes. Not our horrible voting machines, not the electoral college, not the Russians, and not the racists that have come crawling out of the muck.
and they totally give the republicans a pass.

(1,961 posts)Which is why Showtime gave him an entirely new season of his classic show Twin Peaks. If you think he isn't still relevant you're a little bit disconnected. He's certainly relevant among the hollywood cogniscenti which controls a significant portion of our country's cultural outreach... and his position on Trump is nuanced and makes a some sense. If Trump continues his current path and the Mueller investigation doesn't tank him, then Trump will have succeeded in setting a bunch of precedents on extended powers for the office. In essence that's what Lynch was saying... and he's kind of right.

(1,961 posts)Lynch just completed a very highly critically acclaimed new season to his classic Twin Peaks last year on Showtime. I thought the new season was excellent. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, and some criticize him for being misogynistic, but critics, hollywood, and European audiences loves him... and that is a huge market share even if it's not the Marvel movies. Thank you for saying its a stretch to say he's praising trump... The only possible praise was for breaking the bureaucratic status quo.

(19,375 posts)while I worry about some dude whose career is defined by a TV series (Twin Peaks) based on a fictional rape/murder and a movie (Mulholland Drive) best known for being a possibly-non-linear incoherent-psychodrama with a "hot girl-on-girl" scene in the middle. Yes. Be still my beating heart.
JEEEEEESUS. Who gives a flying f*ck what David Lynch thinks about politics, or about Trump, or about 17th century Dutch painters, or about high-altitude-growing conifers, or about garlic-flavored poultry sausages? WHY would anyone care what David Lynch thinks about ANYTHING?
Except *maybe* his next film/TV/artistic project for the sake of artistic/pop-culture curiosity? It's not like anyone outside his circle of intimates knows the guy enough to do so.

(19,107 posts)That's his M.O.
He said he's not interested in politics but likes how Trump is able to do anything he wants and no one can stop him.
I think he just likes anyone who's an iconoclast and isn't aware of what Trump's actions really mean.

(9,445 posts)David Lynch's comment is like saying someone who pooped their pants is a genius because he refused to use the bathroom the way everyone else has been trained to and agrees to do. Trump has not disrupted the system. Trump has been exposed as not knowing what he is doing. It can also be argued that he has been exposed as being lazy. How has he changed, or disrupted the system? What is different now then before he became President? He claimed he was going to drain the swamp. It can be argued that the swamp is even worse than before he became President.
One's inability to get something done within a system is not a sign that they have disrupted a system; it is a sign that that person is incompetent. As I said before, Trump's incompetence has been exposed. We are seeing that much of what he said about himself, if not all of what he said about himself, was a lie.
As far as people supposedly not being able to counter him "in an intelligent way", people have countered him. How many loses has this man taken since getting elected? These loses come even though his party controls all the levers of power in Washington, D.C.
