Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon vetoes right-to-work legislation

Source: Kansas City Star

JEFFERSON CITY — Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon vetoed a measure Thursday that would have made Missouri the 26th right-to-work state, and it’s unclear whether proponents will be able to muster enough support in the Republican-led Legislature to override the veto.

The governor, a longtime opponent of the effort, traveled to the Kansas City area to announce the veto among local United Auto Workers union members near the Ford assembly plant. The bill would have barred workplace contracts that require all employees– even those who aren’t union members – to pay union fees.

Most of the Missouri’s eight neighboring states already have right-to-work laws; the only two that don’t are Illinois and Kentucky. Republican legislators and governors in the Midwestern states Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin all enacted right-to-work laws in the past three years.

Supporters in Missouri say the legislation would attract businesses and spur economic growth, while critics argue it would weaken unions and lead to lower wages.

now it is important that those in Missouri contact their legislators and urge them to vote against an override of that veto.

The only man named Nixon that I agree with. He has a long road ahead because we have an idiot congress in Missouri and is ignorant beyond belief. Thank you Missourians, for all your hard work to defeat this piece of crap legislation. Now, get out an vote these ignorant asses OUT!

ALEC has been pushing RTW legislation in MO for years. RTW legislation has been pushed by the crazies in our state legislature for several years, and they aren't about to relent. Missouri has moved far to the right over the last decade to the point where teabaggers control a supermajority in our state legislature. If a rethuglican gets elected as governor in 2016, this state is fucked, and RTW legislation will pass.

In order to supply enough votes for a Democrat, as much as one can be in a red legislature and it is where Limbaugh is loved and admired.
