Related: About this forumDU's General Election Season postponed until Monday June 20
This discussion thread was locked by Skinner (a host of the Announcements group).
Well, this is embarrassing.
As most of you know, last week we began the seven-day transition period from Primary Season to General Election Season and announced that DU's General Election Season would officially begin on Thursday June 16.
From the perspective of the Admins, this transition has been nowhere near as straightfoward as previous ones. For the past six months we have been planning and building out a new system to replace/upgrade/improve the current Jury system. Elad has been working his butt off to get it finished, and over the last seven days we have been testing the new software with the help of MIRT members.
The new software is ready to go, but we have an unexpected problem -- Elad is not going to be fully available this weekend to monitor the site and make sure everything is running smoothly.
Therefore we have been faced with a choice: either go ahead and put up all the changes tomorrow -- but run the risk that something might go awry over the weekend and make DU unusable for hours at a time -- or wait until Monday when we can be sure that any (inevitable) bugs are identified and fixed quickly.
I know some people like to buy into the fantasy that DU is taking million-dollar handouts from the DNC, but the truth is that this site is now and has always made money solely from member donations and advertising. If we could afford a whole team of programmers, that would be great. But as it is the entire burden of maintaining the database, and programming all of the ideas that EarlG and I come up with, falls to one person: Elad. If he's not available, then we don't have any way to bring the site back if something goes wrong.
This was not an easy decision to make, but we have decided that the safest option is to wait until Monday. I know this will probably come as a disappointment to some of you, but we decided that being forced to wait a few more days before officially ending Primary Season was a better outcome than the possibility that a bug in the new software may shut the site down for the entire weekend.
Our apologies, and thank you for continuing to support and enjoy Democratic Underground. We'll post another announcement on Monday.

(135,425 posts)that would be accurate. You AGREED to follow the TOS--it didn't sneak up on you and bite you in the behind. So either gird your loins and deal with that, or push off smartly to places on the world wide web that you feel better reflect your POV. This isn't the only game in town, but for those of us who LIKE the TOS (and the new "rules" it's a "safe space," if you will.
You don't get to change those rules to suit yourself just because "your guy" didn't win; that's not how it works--go fire up a website that meets your needs, if you want to expend the effort to make that happen. I'm sure there are places where you can bash/trash Dems running for public office to your heart's content...but this place ain't one of 'em.
Sometimes, it is better to just be an adult and move along if something doesn't suit you any longer, rather than try (and frankly, fail) to make everyone else feel badly because they are still enjoying the experience that is causing you heartburn.
Spitfire of ATJ

(135,425 posts)I don't think anyone wants to lose any actual members of this community--but if some DUers are going to be miserable here, they can either be miserable by and to themselves--and not inflict their crabby sorrow on the rest of us-- or they can part ways with us and go where they'll be celebrated. We didn't tolerate that PUMA shit eight years ago, and we're not putting up with it this time, either. This election is too damned important.
It's not like there aren't other websites that will welcome mean-spiritedness and hatred--there are plenty of places where the members get a charge out of shitting on Hillary Clinton during this election campaign--the problem is, the people who frequent those places are often intolerant, racist, sexist, obtuse and ignorant morons. You just can't get intelligent discussion at those places. So, people who just NEED to fling invective at Hillary will have to suffer the opinions of nitwits and, frankly, debase themselves, if they want to crap on Clinton on the internet--because we're just not going to tolerate it here.
And good thing.
But more to the point, I, for one, am a bit piqued at attempts to tamp down any MENTION that the nomination of Hillary Clinton is a BIG F-CKING DEAL, to quote Joe Biden. This is a massive event in American electoral politics. It is an event worthy of CELEBRATION. HRC did it twice as good, "backwards and in high heels" to get half the credit--and the surliness and churlishness of a small number here who refuse to acknowledge that yes, this IS a big deal, and YES, this IS a massive game-changing moment in American politics--just as the nomination of Barack Obama was--is troubling to me. It makes me wonder how "liberal" some of our membership actually is (though more often than not, this kind of denigration comes from low post count members who often do not last long here--another "good thing" .
There's much about the Presidency that is both aspirational and symbolic--and the enthusiasm of some to crush and negate that aspect of Clinton's candidacy makes me go "Hmmmmm."
Spitfire of ATJ
(32,723 posts)Did you miss all of the fly swatter grave dancing?
MADem
(135,425 posts)I'm not sure why you're lecturing me on that sort of behavior when I didn't participate in it. There was plenty of horseshit to go around on that score--hence the flies, and the swatting.
I think everyone who has gotten tombstoned to this point has done something that contradicts the values of the site and the party. And some of 'em got away with murder before the admins finally lost patience.
Look, you want to be annoyed and feel put-upon--that is your choice. It won't change a damn thing, though.
I figure we have a choice when we put our feet on the floor each morning. We can choose to see the glass as half empty, or half full. I'll take full.
I like DU. I like it even better when people just have conversations about issues, and can manage to disagree without having to characterize individual members here.

(14,375 posts)I am still unclear on just what is and what is not allowed after Monday.
Will we be able to mention He-Who-Cannot-Be-Named? Because HWCBN will still need a lot of support on political forums in his bid to push for positive progressive changes in Hillary's platform right up to the convention. This is very important to many Democrats. Will simply writing posts in support of positions of HWCBN that Hillary is not on board with be verboten? Or criticizing the nominee for not considering HWCBN's proposals? I fear many of the more, shall we say, "ardent" supporters of Hillary will be trigger happy after Monday to alert any post not whitewashed clean of any spec of continued support of the other Democratic candidate, HWCBN, and that he, although he has no shot at winning, will still be a big part of the process until the convention.
Isn't some free debate around these issues a productive thing? That is the whole point of HWCBN's reason for continuing on.

Will there be a list of sites that are off limits to post links to or will the sites be judged by their right-wing history or by their anti- Democrat and anti Clinton content. And as such, will the 'other forum' that many here are going to and telling others to go to after Monday be included in the Anti-Democratic and Anti-Clinton sites that cant be used on DU or linked to, or promoted since most of its content is NOT pro-Sanders, but Anti-Democrats and Anti-Clinton. Very curious.
