Were hold outs, and finally the groups shut down. Other groups lost their most active members to Twitter, and then Facebook. Part of it had to do with compatibility with newer devices so I suggested some come here and they have. I can't see going to either of the others, they aren't the format I want to be using but I'll be here indefinitely. Thanks for your words of encouragement. I'm going to delete my message above because I'm not interested in getting flamed for my opinion and it diverts what is simply an announcement. Others have expressed their worries in Meta. I guess this was supposed to be a yeah, cool thread. So, yeah, cool for those who FB. Some good stuff is coming from there, here. I don't mind the FB posts if they're actually made here, and the link does open up without signing in. Have a nice day.

I question the local TV news when they suggest checking them out on facebook and twitter too; why should I go somewhere else when I'm already watching TV?

There is a detriment to spreading a product over too many mediums, marketing isn't all about the "Rumsfeld-ian" full spectrum dominance, it's about having a good product that's easy to understand and use.

And it has to do with being willing to be signed in at multiple places at once and being tracked through the Facebook network.

I have a FB account that I have not visited in years, and then my email, cell phone, etc were being spread, when I'd set everything to private, etc. I set my FB for family and close RL contact, but FB had my email and flooded my inbox.

I kept my real life Democratic Party contacts separate from my real name accounts, and they had too. Then FB started sending us invites to be 'friends,' and the paranoia started up. I'd 'friend' someone and get an angry email as to who I was and what did I want?

They thought they were being spammed, and I got a lot of spam and weird people sending invites I never heard of, now coming to my email address. I never mix these things up.

The FB system sent me the email asking me to be 'friends', not them. I had to block FB from my email account to stop the messages as none of the people I was getting email were people I knew or wanted to know.

Anyway, as you say, there are only so many hours in the day with this. I don't text, FB, Twitter or do other websites any longer, just DU. So my post count is higher than those who split their online time in several places, I post on several things and just have fun at times.

I'm sure this was inevitable and a lot of people were asking for it. The DU Admins have done a great job of accomodating many apps that other sites didn't, so that's been a help to keep people signed in.

Thanks for your response.

While I stand behind all I say on DU I'm not interested in knowing DUers real names and posts w/o their permission nor am I interested in those I don't know, and a world of trolls, knowing mine. Am I being overly concerned? FB seems to want to tell me a lot about what my FB friends do.

all you need is a gmail account. (or hotmail, whatevs) and a fake name for each account.

My fake identity has more "friends" than my real one. I seem to have collected a lot of liberal minded people since I can post what I want without fear of offending friends and family.

My observation: Go for it.

I totally love DU...I only view a couple of sites a day, including DU...but it took me a while to get into it way back when. It is not a "normal" web site. I don't mean that in a bad way, just saying, for most people they log in to shopping sites and look at pictures of puppies. DU though, can be overwhelming for a first timer.

Seriously...I'd suggest a "Welcome to DU" page, to walk the newbies through what is about to smack them in the forehead.

I LOVE DU. But I can't "Like" it on Facebook.

I have several GOP friends. Yeah, really. I like to discuss issues with them, I like to dig deep...but if they have a FOX NEWS logo on their home page, I know they're not really worth talking to. On the other side of this coin, I can see that if they view a Democratic Underground logo on my home page, they will automatically shut out much of what I have to say, too. So I post some baby pictures and lake photos to break it all up before I got for the ball-punch again...without being up-front with a DEMOCRATIC logo on my home page.

Sorry.

I know they can set up the cookies...if you've never been here, they take you to an "Buckle up, bucko, this is the ride you're in for!" page. After ten years here, my wife still says "Oh, you're just looking at DU..." When in reality, I look at DU for "Late Breaking News" first, and never, ever visit the lounge. I really consider it a valuable resource. But I think there are such a ridiculous number of forums now, it makes it very difficult for a newb to know what they're wandering into , or where they're supposed to start.

I was very resistant to FB, but once I gave it a try, it won me over, it really is great in so many ways. My screen name/who I am here is not my real name (obviously) as it is on FB, so I'm not giving up my DU anonymity. I also can set my Facebook DU activity to be only seen by my liberal FB friends. "Liking" DU will initially show on all my friends' newsfeeds, and they can click on it and see, but that's fine because it's their choice to check it out, like it or hate it, and move on. My FB friends know I'm a Democrat and an Obama supporter, but I'm not in their face and don't often post anything political or edgy like I would here at the website.

I understand the problem faced by people who don't want to be completely open to their Facebook friends (especially, perhaps, conservative family members or employers). Fortunately, I don't have that problem. Thus, I'm in your category of not caring about the security of my real name.

BTW, now that DU is on Facebook, shouldn't the DU spell-checker be told to stop flagging "Facebook" with a red underline?
