UA officials discuss what deep budget cuts mean for system
FAIRBANKS — The University of Alaska Board of Regents was presented with pages of academic programs, research projects and recruitment efforts that would get the ax if the state Senate has its way with cuts.
The Republican-controlled Senate has proposed a $22 million cut to the university as part of its budget plans last week, but the House and Gov. Bill Walker have called to keep UA funding at the current level of $325 million. The final number will be decided in end-of-session negotiations.
The Thursday meeting was called last week to clarify just what would be cut if the Senate’s $303 million funding level stands in the final budget.
Officials from each campus presented contingency plans for how they would cope with the cuts.
