Fire cancels classes for 2 weeks at 2 Blount County schools

Classes at two Blount County schools have been cancelled for the remainder of the week after a fire early Tuesday at J.B. Pennington High School.

The blaze erupted in the media room and caused extensive damage. Blount County 911 Director Caleb Branch said firefighters were dispatched to the school on College Street in Blountsville at 5:15 a.m. Blountsville firefighters responded, and five other fire agencies joined them to assist.

The high school, as well as nearby Blountsville Elementary School, will remain closed for the remainder of the week. Both will reopen on April 3 after Spring Break.

Blount County Board of Education officials said they have a plan in place to accommodate the students upon their return, which includes mobile units that will be placed around the campus.
