in both cursive and print. I had to be able to decipher their letters and numbers on tests and homework for over 15 years. NOT EASY! Something is wrong here..no comment beyond that or DU will bust me.

(55,137 posts)It is taught in 4th in CA. My 6th graders had to write their Spelling Tests in cursive and in print in case there was difficulty figuring out what they spelled correctly as opposed to whether or not their handwriting was legible. Barron's writing looks like my first graders more than my 6th graders.(age 11). This is odd to say the least.

(2,504 posts)quit teaching cursive a few years ago at least. My cousin's kids are 9 and 13. My cousin has taught her 9yo how to sign his name in cursive. The 13yo was taught how to her name, but not much beyond that apparently. They both go to public schools in a fairly well rated district.

(4,917 posts)leaving the decision in the hands of local school boards. NYC public schools just recommenced teaching it in 2017; I'm not sure if it's a requirement or just strongly encouraged.
There are private schools that stopped teaching it as well. I don't know if the private school that Barron Trump attended taught it or not, but they were under no obligation to do so AFAIK.

(15,522 posts)If they still include it where you teach, your school is not the norm.

(30,613 posts)I always found cursive to be slow and ugly, and in my profession, block printing is the norm.

(7,952 posts)We learned cursive by third grade. I know they don't teach it anymore, so does that mean every Millenial going forward is going to print their name on their checks?
BigmanPigman
(55,137 posts)This has been going on for years. Today's teenagers have some strange writing that is similar to print but it has strange slant, curves and angles. We do not teach it that way but by middle school they are all writing in the same style. They used to help me in my classroom and my first graders could print better than the high school kids. In fact, they would come up to me and ask me to figure out the written comments on their homework since they weren't familiar with this hybrid form and we would try to de-code it together.

(60,160 posts)because have used computer for the last 20 years, out of practice with using a pen, except for checks.
got a note from my middle aged kid, he printed, rather than cursive.
kinda sad all that beautiful copperplate writing has died out.

(15,522 posts)I think signatures will just become print. When mine have to sign a form now, they just print their name.
lagomorph777
(30,613 posts)Going forward, those aren't a thing.
Signatures will be biometric or digital.
My signature has never been the same twice. Nobody has ever questioned it. That tells you the value of a signature for identification.

(15,686 posts)And I doubt that is even his signature. Looks like whoever put that mess of a card together just faked a kid's writing in glue before sprinkling the gold glitter over it.
BigmanPigman
(55,137 posts)I hold my dog's paw to make her sign cards as a joke(to other dogs...we have a lot of dog lovers around here). Barron's signature looks like Spike wrote it...or one of my former first graders who went wild with her sparkly glue pen. Definitely not an 11 year old.

(53,194 posts)This is an example of (very, very bad - I can't imagine sending work out that looks this bad, and I've printed pawn tickets) thermography. It's a fun process. You print a job on an offset press, then before the ink dries you sprinkle it with a special powdered plastic before sending it through a heat tunnel. The plastic reacts with the wet ink and swells up. It's also the cheapest form of raised printing...every used car dealer in the world has his business cards printed this way. It looks cheap and tawdry because it is. So...it's perfect for Asshole's Christmas card. What the hell ever happened to just printing in black ink on 18-point Strathmore Bristol Vellum with a reproduction of a Currier and Ives watercolor or something on the cover? It looks classy and it doesn't cost that much. (Which may be the reason he didn't do it that way.)

(13,291 posts)That would refer to all the times Donnie Two Scoops has seemed to have written self-aggrandizing letters of support saying how he is he smartest, best and overall smartest person in the world, but put someone else's name on them. Or his letter from the crazy-looking doctor that says he'll be the healthiest person to ever be President. He also used to make phone calls while pretending to be his own publicist. http://1clickurls.com/L164CmK
It also references the idea that Ivanka is nothing but an eye-candy trophy wife who isn't smart enough to even sign her name.
The only thing missing is a photo of him holding the Christmas card up for everyone to see, like he does with Executive Orders. "Look what I did, Mommy!"

Baron should be totally off limits.

(10,595 posts)for people who think they're important, to have a signature that is distinctive and cannot be easily copied. The trump part of his and Melanie's signatures are not the same but they seem to have a similar structure. I bet she copied her style from him. Just a guess.
I've had employers with equally weird signatures.

(13,776 posts)I really truly do.
I've been inclined to like Barron ever since the inauguration when he was sweet and playing with one of his little nieces or nephews. I still like him.
There's no use pretending that his signature isn't more like that of a child a few years younger. But that's none of our business. (And I helped the teacher grade my son's classmates' homework when he was that age, and it's not dramatically different from what's typical, really.) I think it's really nice that it was included on the card anyway, since it's not representative of the image his father would probably like to present.
Thus endeth what is probably the last nice thing I will ever say about his dad.
