San Mateo dog groomer arrested after Dachshund in his care dies

A San Mateo dog groomer was arrested and booked for animal cruelty when a young Dachshund left in his care for grooming on Sunday died after suffering two broken ribs and a punctured lung, police said.
Juan Zarate, 38, of San Francisco was arrested at the PetSmart store in the 3500 block of South El Camino Real after officers found that deliberate actions committed by Zarate likely contributed to the animals death, according to sergeant Richard Decker of the San Mateo Police Department.
According to police, the dogs owner, a 47-year-old San Mateo man, had brought the 1-year-old dog to the store for grooming. About three minutes later, Zarate came out of the grooming office holding the dog and saying it was suffering from a medical emergency. An on-site veterinarian was unable to save the animal, which was bleeding from its mouth and breathing with difficulty. A subsequent X-ray revealed the internal injuries, Decker said.

(25,250 posts)I wouldn't want to be walking down the same block as this thug, let alone hire him if I were the manager of a PetSmart.

(2,902 posts)We should let the investigation happen. I worked in a pet store while in high school, and we lost several dogs.
