Here's where cyclosporiasis is spreading as cases are confirmed in 32 states

Cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal infection caused by a parasite, are currently being reported in nearly three dozen states, according to an ABC News tally.

As of Friday, at least 2,844 cases have been reported in 32 states, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state health departments show.

The CDC said the true number of people sick with cyclosporiasis is likely higher than the reported figure because some people recover without medical care and are not tested for the parasite.

Cyclosporiasis symptoms, treatment and how it's spread: Everything to know about the intestinal parasitic disease
Most cases are currently being reported in Michigan with 1,562 as of Friday, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). At least 44 people have been hospitalized in the state.

That no identified sources have been at least temporally and regional-distributed-linked is disturbing. It only underscores the result of massive disruptions/dismantling of CDC's foodborne infections program and epidemiology/statistics programs funded by CDC (formerly) in state health departments nationwide.

Rot in hell, RFK Jr, Elon Musk, and obviously Donald Trump for this and other health disasters currently (and to come).

We had one of the largest outbreaks of Crypto in US history, back in the late 90s. We ultimately had related cases all around the country in people who had been to Milwaukee. In WI the problem was a public water supply that got contaminated during maintenance of the filters that remove protozoan spores.

There's an incubation period of a week or so before people get sick enough to go to a clinic. And if a contamination is on a large scale you are going to get people who visited the area heading back to their homes and then getting symptoms.

Foods and beverages also end up moving around the country as part of routine commerce. Milk products can end up a thousand miles from where they originated the contamination.

The CDC's investigators will have coordinated a common questionnaire the whens, the wheres, the foods the drinks that early ill people report encountering for 3 days to a week before getting sick as wells as typical known routes for getting Crypto (which leaves people in poop) across all states and into people's mouths. Local clinics (and possibly local health depts) will be contacting sick people (and their families) to get answers to that questionnaire The states will report to the CDC. One large dataset will be created that will allow statistical evaluation of relationships between possible exposures, human behaviors and places.

That will let the geographic focus of the epidemic, and potential food or drink carriers of the Crypto spores be revealed. It could be specific to an identifiable institution, food, or even an event (like a meal at a convention) We'll know pretty soon.

The people doing these investigations are good at what they do and they believe in the importance of what they do. We'll have answers soon. If you need to do something, wash your hands after toileting, wash surfaces that contact your food prep, and for things like raspberries, dunk them in vinegar, washing will cut down any Crypto present, and the acidity of the vinegar will cut Cryptos viability.
