Maybe Mitch made a terrible mess puking and shitting his guts out
Maybe Mitch fell and bled all over the hardwood.

Maybe Mitch isn't dead, but is seriously paralyzed. Forcing things like elevators and stair lift systems to be added to the house
Even if he's just partially paralyzed they may need a carpet that won't trip him.
