ME-SEN: Duckworth opposes candidate to replace Platner: 'Maine deserves better'

Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) on Thursday urged Democratic Maine Senate candidate Nirav Shah to end his newly launched campaign, reviving prior criticism of his handling of a deadly Legionnaires’ disease outbreak while he led Illinois’ public health department.

“Maine deserves better than someone who put his public image before the safety of our Veterans,” Duckworth wrote on the social platform X. “Too many of our heroes lost their lives under Nirav Shah’s watch as Illinois Public Health Director.”

Duckworth had called on Shah, who led the Illinois Department of Public Health from 2015 to 2019, to resign in 2018 following investigations into an outbreak at the Illinois Veterans’ Home that killed at least 13 veterans and sickened dozens more.

“There was definitive evidence that a serious public health crisis was underway at the veterans’ home in Quincy in 2015, and the Rauner Administration and Director Shah chose to sit on their hands as veterans and staff at the home fell victim to these deadly bacteria,” Duckworth said in a 2018 joint statement with Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.).

Everyone who is not a Maine resident should back the hell off and let Maine Democrats clean up this mess.

Endorsements from the party establishment will be the kiss of death for any candidate. The primary voters voted against the party establishment.

If the folks in Maine ask for help, by all means give them what they want. The rest of us should not be telling them what they need.

Just as it should be.

A new reader from Maryland shouldn't be telling Maine voters to boycott
A senator from Illinois shouldn't be handing information out to the R's that will punish Shah
Pundits from around the world should quit editorializing prescriptions, and sit back and think about what Maine produces.

I've never heard this chorus of "only so-and-so state gets to comment on so-and-so's state elections" before.

As long as their candidates are asking for donations from outside their state and as long as their elected officials have an impact on the citizens of every state, we all are entitled to voice our opinion here.

After electing a creepy fake progressive to represent the Democratic Party, I think they need outside help.

This is a black eye for the Democratic Party nationally. 🤔😏
