The Justice Department sent letters to at least 10 states on Tuesday threatening criminal prosecution of top election officials if ballots cast by noncitizens were counted in upcoming elections, the New York Times reports.
The letters arrived in the midst of an ongoing campaign by President Trump and his allies to tighten election rules to prevent a problem that doesnt exist: widespread noncitizen voting in American elections.

(115,401 posts)I don't think we are yet at the point where we have to anticipate the intentions of millions of people and act before one even does so*. Maybe Spielberg movies, but at the point some DOJ moron tries to indict, let's see what any and nearly all judges--sick to death of their antics--decide to do.
*States do investigate ballots that cannot be confirmed to be eligible to be cast and they do prosecute. But pre-anticipation and removal of these ballots ahead of time when it is on the order of 1/million? Yeah, right. Let me see a judge who will back you up on this, you assholes. Elections are a state function. Period.

(5,343 posts)just the intimidation. Like all these arrests where the case gets thrown out, the proof ain't the pudding, the fear is.
Hmm. I wonder what law they are breaking with this letter? Can States threaten back? But then it comes down to who has the firepower.

The fear is not performative. It is real, induced by threats and arrests, even if those threats and arrests do not result in jail time, but in sleepless nights or legal bill impoverishment.

(134,057 posts)points that feel like fear or anger or love when it is all manipulation meant to move the public in a certain direction or another: fear bombing or hate bombing or love bombing. The pressure point may be performative from the point of view of the person initiating the emotions/reactions, a psychopath of one type or another, but it sure feels real. I should know better than to forget the victims of such action. I've had to live with it since I was 30.
