united in the face of adversity brought on by what many people, not just Americans, felt was a poor decision by a referee. A rabid fan base shared those feelings and was hugely supportive. It was the kind of atmosphere in which a crew of elite athletes, united by a single purpose, is sometimes able to shock the world.
Then it all went to hell. Donald Trump, just as he did with America's 250th birthday celebration, decided to make the World Cup all about himself. Behind closed doors, two of the most corrupt and unpopular people on the planet engaged in machinations - directly controverting FIFA's rules by injecting politics into a decision - and just like that the men's team, through no fault of it's own, was suddenly perceived as a bunch pf whiners, unwilling to abide by the rules. The swashbuckling, aggressive squad that the country had embraced was no where to be seen last night, replaced by a listless and tentative group which played as if they were slightly abashed by the extraordinary ruling which favored them, while a highly-skilled Belgian team, already motivated to reach the quarterfinals, came out of the locker room breathing fire, took an early lead, and even after the US team was briefly able to level the score, the result never felt seriously in doubt.
So yet again, Donald Trump has displayed his uncanny mastery of the "Feces Touch", as everything he comes in contact with turns to shit.
