All the "how would we know the difference?" jokes aside, I think it's entirely possible that he's on life support and not expected to recover. It would explain a lot, imo, like why there's so much secrecy surrounding this.

We'll have to wait and see what happens, of course, but I won't be the least bit surprised if his passing is suddenly announced with as little actual information provided as possible.

If McConnell is declared dead or incapable by his doctors and his next of kin BEFORE August 3rd, there will be a Special Election in Kentucky to replace him and finish out the term.

If McConnell is declared dead or incapable (again, doctors and wife) AFTER August 3rd, there won't be a special election and Governor Beshear will announce the replacement for McConnell. Beshear is required by law to select a Republican replacement.

So the critical date is August 3rd - three months before the November election. That's why the doctors, the McConnell family and the McConnell staff members have remained silent. They're dragging this out to make us believe that he's going to pop out of this and come running back to the Senate any day now. Bullsh*t!
