Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner has postponed a string of events Sunday and Monday as rumors circulate among Maine Democrats and over social media about another potentially damaging story to come about the oyster farmers past.
Platner postponed a planned town hall in Augusta on Sunday after reportedly missing a Fourth of July parade in Machias. The Gorham Democrats on Monday morning said a town hall set for Monday was postponed because Platner was not feeling well. And a Sanford town hall previously listed on Mobilize was later taken down.
The Platner campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the events. The postponements came as multiple Democrats told the Bangor Daily News they expected a national outlet to drop a story about Platner Monday or Tuesday. Rumors about potentially damaging stories on the progressive candidate increasingly swirled online Sunday night and Monday, just as they did before the New York Times published a story last month featuring a few ex-girlfriends of Platners alleging toxic behavior. He denied ever being physically violent in a relationship.
The prediction market Kalshi showed the odds of Platner dropping out rising to more than 9% from 2% Monday morning.

(35,078 posts)(Kinda like when Biden dropped out)
However, Platner would legally need to withdraw. Not just be AWOL.
LeftInTX
(35,078 posts)State Party would have a nominating convention like they did for Harris.
But he needs to withdraw. He can't be "kicked out" by the party. Being AWOL doesn't count.

(26,115 posts)There's a lot of anger about this. And fear. I've tried to stay out of pontificating about it because I'm a Californian and I figured I was missing something, but if this goes sidesways expect a lot of "I told you sos".

The guy holds public events almost every day. So if he misses a few because he feels crappy he has to issue press releases?

Who are these "multiple Democrats" saying a story is about to break?
I guess time will tell if there's anything to it.

(937 posts)Maybe the left can vet their own candidates. This should be the end of listening to Bernie Sanderss endorsements. Tulsi Gabbard and Fetterman were bad enough.
AOC held back on Platner. We should have listened.

(26,115 posts)the Dems can pick a new nominee. Maybe someone can weigh in from Maine because I admit I'm clueless.

(35,078 posts)Remember when Biden dropped out? Kamala was nominated on August 1st.
I believe the process is similar, but I didn't research Maine's law.

NPR has not independently verified the claims, but in a statement Platner adamantly denied them.
"These allegations are troubling, serious, and false. Any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically untrue," he said."

(433 posts)That says he needs to drop out. The fact he lied about cancelling events due to not feeling well further shows he can't be trusted. This has been an absolute disaster and has to end. If there is any chance to replace him with Governor Mills, we should consider ourselves lucky and do it immediately.

I hope the DNC can replace him with the governor and they need to learn their lesson from this and better vet their candidates for major offices like US senate.
