(33,183 posts)I have been asking that we refer to our people on the left as FDR Democrats. But Bernie has nothing to do with what I would like.

(8,460 posts)But he has constantly refused to join the Democratic Party. Plus he's in his 80s. There are younger leaders in the Democratic Party to led it forward.

(128 posts)And remember, he is in a leadership position within our party.
Ask why young people love Bernie. Do you know who else they love? Ed Markey who won his election thanks to young people who showed up in droves for him due to his stance and policies on climate change.
Here, have a picture of him on a windy day lol 😂 This picture always cracks me up lol

(8,460 posts)I don't see him listed in leadership on the DNC website.

(33,183 posts)I will follow and endorse several of them. We are all Democrats, and we remain a big tent party.

(440 posts)He is an octogenarian who has been in Congress since 1993. We keep talking about needing new, younger leaders but many of those same people keep clinging to Bernie. Why can't AOC or Mamdani lead the left flank of the Democratic coalition?

(1,733 posts)For years in PA, I was registered as Republican, mostly so I could vote in the Republican primaries for the more sensible candidates. (PA has closed primaries) in the general elections, I could vote for Democrats. It also gives me some more credence when I call the R representatives to complain. I live in a red part of the state, so my Congressman is always R.

(30,798 posts)FDR did wonderful things for this country, even while living in real pain (not bone spurs.) MAGAts won't recognize it because they know nothing of history, and don't want to know. They should have to sit down and watch the documentary of his life on the History Channel.

(35,918 posts)Nobody who understands the Great Depression
can be anything other than a New Deal Democrat.
I learned about the Great Depression from stories
my parents and grandparents told me.
Roosevelt saved their lives, literally. Gave my dad
a job with CCC before he became an airplane mechanic
in Dallas... allowed him to get a free college education
after the war. Etc.
When Eisenhower got elected my Irish grandmother
wrecked her car, she was so upset.
When my cousin came out to her parents, my uncle
said: Is that all? I thought you were going to say you
became a Republican.

(2,225 posts)Besides, so much of our current population is foreign born or born to those who emigrated here.
Calling ourselves FDR is a bridge to nowhere. While I admire many things he accomplished invoking the name of a president that died over 80 years ago shows how out of touch some folks are.
This is like hearing republicans call themselves the party of Lincoln. Its all laughable and you gotta wonder who this rhetoric appeals to.
At least 40% of the population was born after 1993 and the Clinton years were perhaps this countrys absolute peak in terms of power and overall standard of living. The only president to leave a fiscal surplus. That sounds like some sort of fantasy at this point.

(8,460 posts)Integrated the military, which FDR refused to do. The rest went in the 60s when LBJ passed the Civil Rights Act. But the party under FDR in the 30s was full of segregationists.

(343 posts)but I wish we could dispense with labels and just state policies that we favor. Republicans and the media are masters at taking a name and twisting it without getting into substance. How about just stating what we want to enact? Health Care for All; Living Wage; Clean Air and Water, A Woman's Right to Choose . . . . Polls show that the majority of Americans support these policies, but when we fall into the trap of allowing ourselves to being labeled "socialist" or "tax and spend", people make decisions based on their reaction to that label, rather than the substance. It's Marketing 101 and the Republicons are masters at it.

(3,570 posts)Talking about something from nearly a hundred years ago will get you nowhere. Maintaining the status quo is a loser like in 2024. Mexico just got universal health care and a guaranteed 40 hour work week. The only way to counter right wing bullshit is to attack, not react.
SocialDemocrat61
(8,460 posts)Involking FDR and the New Deal is a fool's errand. It will make Democrats look out of touch and stuck in the past. Plus many minorities, such as African, Jewish and Asian Americans, don't revere FDR and the New Deal the way middle class white people do.

(380 posts)Single payer healthcare?
Free education through college?
A living wage for all, including farmers?
Doing away with unfair competition and monopolies?
Good housing?
These address very real, modern day problems. Yes, there are other needs to be addressed, but this is a good start
SocialDemocrat61
(8,460 posts)And all of those go farther than FDR's Second Bill of Rights.

(380 posts)I also think you read the commentary, both modern and contemporary, around that speech. You also need to recognize that this speech was done in collaboration with his VP, Henry Wallace, a man who was a socialist in everything but name. FDR was truly progressive, for his time and ours. Certainly much more progressive than any of the Democratic candidates since 1972.

(2,663 posts)... an FDR Democrat through and through. I learned all the WOBBLY songs, I was taught real democrat, and though I did not believe it as a young person, but my mama told me to never EVER trust a Republican, she said all they care about is money and detests the working class.
I believe it 100% now. We laughed and were proud that FDR mocked us as being "too socialists" by calling we Washingtonians, "The Soviet Republic of Washington. I am old but I remember the teachings well from my grandparents' knee so I listened, and for decades I have been a democratic socialist and will be one until I die. Here is a "democratic socialist" song. speaking to establishment politicians that should revive as a song for today even though it is 130 years old. Post it everywhere.
Here is the 1894 song often sand as a children's song but in reality it was written in 1864 as a protest song. Listen to the song and read the words, it is the way I have felt since Reagan.

(2,225 posts)Just 4% of the population is over 80. Our current population especially in many swing states is foreign born or born to those who were foreign born. Its a completely different country.

(29,510 posts)Obama's ACA was FDR-like. It's really the status quo for Democrats. FDR: the Democratic establishment.
Or do you mean, after Trump's commie ranting, as a way to assure voters that Democrats aren't socialists or commies?
