The photo, taken on July 4 by Reuters photographer Cheney Orr, depicts a Black woman sitting on a Washington Metro train while surrounded by members of the Patriot Front, a white nationalist group. Hundreds of Patriot Front members marched through Washington Saturday afternoon as the nation celebrated its 250th anniversary.
And now, social media is abuzz with reactions to the photo.
I feel like the photo of this Black woman surrounded by dozens of masked, anonymous, white nationalists is going to be a defining picture of this moment in America for a long, long time, Melanie DArrigo, executive director of the Campaign for New York Health, wrote on X.
Your great grandchildren will see this photo in their history books. This is a defining image of the era of American history we live in, liberal commentator Dean Withers said.
This photo really hit me hard

That the president welcomed them to his celebration. And National Guard troops patrolling the city, guarding the algae-infested Reflecting Pool and arresting people for putting their hands in the water, were too busy to do anything about these masked nazis.

(4,258 posts)I don't support the penalty inflicted on most of them, to be clear, as I don't think most of the were 'involved' in the shooting, but it was not a peaceful protest

(20,040 posts)The other protesters were sentenced for their involvement in the attack at the Prairieland Detention Center, where "fireworks were set off" and "property was damaged." Prosecutors claimed they were part of an "Antifa cell," and accused them of "attempted murder" and "providing material support to a terrorist group." Two received 50-year sentences for "rioting" and another received 30 years for "possessing political pamphlets" related to the group.

(28,084 posts)I've ridden the DC Metro (know what t looks like).
Anyway, now that I know it's a bus - it makes it even more chilling bc of Rosa Parks's experience!
And, woah, I've never seen that particular photo (the bottom one) of her on the bus.
The monsters are still with us.
.
The article says iit's a train how did I miss that. And the windows are dark like in a tunnel.Either way it brings Rosa to mind

There were photos of fireworks on July 4. Photos of the president preening at Mount Rushmore. Photos of the predictably over-the-top red, white and blue patriotic display in Philadelphia before the holidays World Cup match between France and Paraguay. But those spectacles provided a facade that only sees the country as America the Beautiful, when reality is far more complex. The journalist on the Washington Metro who photographed the young Black woman beset by members of the racist Patriot Front provided an uglier and more honest image of this American moment.....
Was there a more poignant photo of America at 250 years old than the one Reuters captured of a young Black woman on a Washington commuter train surrounded by white nationalists with covered faces?

Besides, Black people never have to go looking for white supremacy to be confronted by it. They can count on it showing up soon enough.

âI came to this country as an infant and became a U.S. citizen,â Roswell Encina said. âSo sitting there, on the Fourth of July, I couldnât help but think about the promise of America and the work still required to protect it.â
www.advocate.com/news/people/...
That is the story of that photo: A young Black woman on the Metro going about her business and then finding herself surrounded. While more details about her background and where she was going would be nice to know, those details arent necessary to absorb the symbolism to see that she, in that moment, has a particularly acute case of a chronic problem that infects us all.

The Anti-Defamation League said masked members of Patriot Front marched Saturday through the nations capital in what it described as a flash demonstration timed to the countrys 250th Independence Day celebrations. Videos shared on social media show the group marching in formation while chanting Reclaim America.
The ADL estimated Patriot Front's previous largest public demonstration drew about 200 participants but said this weekend's march appeared to be substantially larger.
According to the ADL, Patriot Front carefully plans its demonstrations to attract attention while limiting counterprotests, avoiding law enforcement intervention and controlling the group's online messaging.
Texas has a number of hate groups and sundown jurisdictions (places where any non-whites need to be out of before sunset). I am still disappointed and sad at this.
