Pope Leo, in Cameroon, decries world 'ravaged by tyrants'

Last edited Thu Apr 16, 2026, 08:56 AM - Edit history (1)

BAMENDA, Cameroon, April 16 (Reuters) - Pope Leo blasted leaders who spend billions on wars and said the world was "being ravaged by a handful of tyrants", in unusually forceful ‌remarks in Cameroon on Thursday after U.S. President Donald Trump attacked him again on social media.

Leo, the first U.S. pope, also decried leaders who used religious language to justify wars and urged a "decisive change of course" in a meeting in the biggest city in Cameroon's anglophone regions, where a simmering conflict going back nearly a decade has left thousands dead.

The masters of war pretend not to know that it takes only a moment to destroy, yet often a lifetime is not enough to rebuild," the pontiff said.

"They turn a blind eye to the fact that billions of dollars are spent on killing and devastation, yet the resources needed for healing, education and restoration are nowhere to be found."

Pope Leo in Bamenda: “Woe to those who bend religions and the very name of God to their own military, economic, and political objectives, dragging what is holy into what is most filthy and dark.”

I hope it wakes some more people up, to the truth about the current world crisis. It may not, but the Pope has a fairly large audience, so it certainly can't hurt!

I see elsewhere where Clarence Thomas, Scott Bessent and others are calling for the little people to sacrifice for security. Same old bullshit tune, different day. These people are very bad - basically murderers by proxy - and they have to go - and I don't care by what means.

Who said religion and politics shouldn't be mixed?

He is doing it - in a very good way.
