That $2 million toll on oils tankers passing through the Hormuz Strait....

would earn Iran $70 billion per year. No wonder Trump is talking about getting in on the action by partnering up with Iran.

for doing such a magnificent job of "presidenting". And lets remember that Trump "donates" his entire $400K presidential salary to charity, so he is owed big time by the American and Iranian people.

I guess what I'm getting at is, is it legal to charge fees and guard transit like it is sovereign territory?

Anti-flame disclaimer - I agree the war is illegal, Trump is scum, and lives are more important than everything else. It's a simple question about legality, international convention or whatever governs this as I really don't know a lot about the Strait area. I'm not asking who claims this or that or who deserves it because whatever. Just facts as the internet is a tough search these days. Thanks!

The Strait of Hormuz is not considered "high seas" (international waters); it is an international strait composed of the territorial waters of Iran and Oman. While these countries have sovereignty over the waters, international law (UNCLOS) mandates a right of "transit passage" for shipping, prohibiting arbitrary closure.
