.... it kinda gets on your nerves. But if you are in a receptive mood - her message is absolutely spot on. Bless her quirky humor.

... from an old Merv Griffin show. Quick on the quip, delicately bruising her opponent.

She did mean insults .( like Don Rickles) Paula tries to be kind in her insults. I Iike Paula, I didn't like Phyllis.

But I think you may be thinking of their voices and someone in your life you didn't like had that same voice?

(Voice inflection is the modulation of pitch, tone, volume, and pace while speaking to convey meaning, emotion, and emphasis - to drive the comedic point home.)

Agreed, Phyllis Diller was sorta like a less crude version of Andrew Dice Clay. But she was not as particularly injurious or offencive to minorities in her audience as the backbone of her stage act.

Her stage personna was a manic, disheveled, loud mouthed, boisterous, sort of drunken house wife. Mostly her poison dart humor was aimed at herself and her husband - stage named "Fang" - who were the recipients of her self depreciation form of humor that was her signature thing.
