(9,331 posts)I had an endometrioma (benign) removed in my early 40s - no major organ such as lung or heart was touched. That was long before the internet, but I was in the hospital for five days, and they almost didn't release me then - I had an allergic fever (probably from exposure to all the disinfectants used in keeping the place clean) and they didn't get it. But had there been laptops, I truly doubt they would have let me have one. Of course today we have phones (I don't, but that's me) but still - a lung is a major organ and she is probably being kept bust with breathing exercises and has one or more IVs.

(34,197 posts)I knew she had issues and had lung cancer previously, but I thought she was clear.
Here is her post the night before surgery:
https://www.democraticunderground.com/100221099272
I have to be there between 5 and 5:30 a.m. The surgery is slated to start at 7:30 a.m. PST. It could take 4 hours to accomplish.
All the months of diagnostics, xrays, ct scans, blood work and etc. will culminate tomorrow.
And yes, I'm scared.
The enormity of this surgery is now hitting me. I am working on staying calm throughout the day. My daughter will be here later today so she'll drive me to the hospital.
The Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The irony is not lost on me.
I hope that you will keep me in your thoughts! My deep thanks to all who respond. It means a lot.

(29,292 posts)I keep checking for an update, and trying but failing not to find the silence ominous.
Im sure we all hoped she might have asked her daughter to post on her behalf if she wasnt up to doing it herself.

(37,916 posts)...are probably overwhelmed with many issues of communication between the medical teams and one another, as well as with the patient herself.
Those of us who have lived through major familial health events within their families - as I'm sure many, maybe most, of us have - will recall as much.
Probably we at DU must expect and accept to be, as much as we love her and are concerned, low priority.
The wait will add to the joy of her eventual return for which we all hope.

(37,916 posts)Some months back my wife had a surgical heart procedure via catherization, very low risk, and I was going nuts the whole time.
I couldn't even communicate with my sons and her sisters, and in any case, I had no information myself other than what was on a status screen.
This is a major cancer surgery and things can be minute to minute for the medical teams themselves and they may not be able to afford the distraction of communicating.
We all hope for the best, but she is not alone for sure. Having been such a warm and wonderful person, I'm sure she is bathed in love to which our own at DU, can only add.

(17,538 posts)What has me concerned is that I would have thought that Peggy would have instructed her family to update DU - because....she's Peggy!!!! And she always has all bases covered.
As others have mentioned, I will (as well) continue to pray for her complete and speedy recovery - and will be quite relieved once we hear that she's doing well.

It is probably going to be a while. NN makes several important points in his thoughtful replies in the thread.
Keep the faith and keep lifting her, her team and family up. That's the best we can do now.
