The family of Sudbury native and former NHLer and Sudbury Wolves player Ron Duguay has started a GoFundMe to help pay for treatments after he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer a year ago.
Media reports state that the cancer originated in the 68-year-olds colon and has spread to his appendix and gallbladder.
Our dad has never been someone who asks for help
especially when it comes to money, said the GoFundMe page, which to date has raised about $59,000 out of a $100,000 goal.
He has always tried to handle everything on his own and didnt want to burden anyone else with what hes going through. But after many conversations as a family, we decided to create this fundraiser for him because weve seen firsthand the weight this battle has placed on him, both physically and financially.
The GoFundMe page, started by his daughters Shay Thomas and Amber Stavros, said their dad is receiving treatments in California, which is adding to his expenses, as it requires him to fly from Florida to California every two weeks.

(10,836 posts)It's hard for me to believe the NHL does not have medical insurance that covers retired players. I'm also certain Duguay had some pretty lucrative contracts with the Rangers and that medical insurance had to be addressed in them.
