The fight against the construction of two ICE detention facilities in Georgia have reached Congress as Senator Raphael Warnock filed amendments to a federal funding bill.
H. R. 7147, a bill to make "appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security" for 2026's fiscal year is being debated on Capitol Hill as lawmakers demand additional restrictions on ICE operations before the DHS can be funded.
Warnock, who is in his first six-year term in the Senate, proposed amendments to the bill, thrusting the debate inside Georgia onto the national stage.
Where are ICE facilities in Georgia?
A massive warehouse outside Social Circle, Georgia was purchased by the DHS earlier in February to be converted into an ICE detention center with a 5,000-10,000 detainee capacity.
The purchase was made to the opposition of local leaders, who worried about the infrastructure stresses on their small, 5,000-person community, as well as the safety of their residents.

The Oakwood facility was confirmed by Rep. Andrew Clyde (Wackadoodle -R) in The Gainesville Times.

Maybe if every other state does the same thing, it might slow this thing down. If they don't have places to put people, maybe they'll be a little more careful about who they grab. If there's anything you don't want to ever do, it's giving police or ICE or whoever a bottomless pit to throw people into. They'll try to fill it up.
