She finished second in her part of the team event. They have team events with the males females and pairs now. It precedes the individual events.

4. This is just nonsense. Liu's chance at a gold medal hasn't been "ruined".

Look, I hate JD Vance with a passion and think Alyssa Liu is amazing. But, for starters, skaters in the team event, which is the competition in which Liu was performing, don't win individual medals. Second, while Liu didn't finish first, she finished second and earned the team 9 points, while the Japanese skater that finished first earned 10 points for her team. At the end of the first day, notwithstanding Liu finishing second in the short program part of the team competition, the US team had a 5 point lead over Japan. Also, Liu herself acknowledged that the motorcade was only a part of the reason she was running late --- she also admitted she was tardy in getting her gear together. But, in any event, she put on a great performance and came in second because the Japanese skater, herself a three-time world champion, was simply better. Finally, no one has indicated that Ilia Malinan, the greatest men's skater in the world, was impacted by Vance's motorcade and he also finished second with what he admitted was a sub-par performance.

Bottom line -- Vance is an ass, but he and his motorcade didn't "ruin" Liu's shot a gold medal. She'll get one if the US maintains its lead in the team event and she'll have an opportunity to win another one in the individual competition later in the games.

Would it be great to win another gold on top of her individual event? Of course but this is really an event to create more medals and more airtime content.

They started doing this with a lot of sports a while ago.

6. I think this argument is pretty weak.

I’m not convinced that a Democratic VP would have a better car/security situation. Its easy to hate Vance, but unless he made her take a ride with him this video doesn’t make a strong argument.

As it indicates, the Vance motorcade was one issue, but also that Alyssa was running late because "Liu, who appears to live in a perpetual state of controlled chaos was running late because she hadn’t gathered all of her gear in time."

In any event, the clip in the OP is BS because as others have pointed out, she wasn't skating for an individual medal and the US team was still leading in the team competition at the end of the day.
