51 percent in Virginia poll favor redistricting

A narrow majority of Virginia voters support midcycle redistricting, new polling shows, as Democrats in the state work to put forward an amendment this spring.

The Wason Center for Civic Leadership at Christopher Newport University found 51 percent of Virginia voters backed a constitutional amendment that would let the state Legislature temporarily draw new district lines outside the usual Census-tied timeline.

Another 43 percent disapproved of the plan, and 7 percent weren’t sure. While 61 percent of Republicans opposed the proposal, 63 percent of Democrats supported it, according to the poll.

After state lawmakers passed the proposal this month, a local county circuit court judge ruled Tuesday that Virginia Democrats would not be allowed to move forward with the amendment, which was set to go before voters in April.
