Scary nonetheless.

(3,003 posts)We have shown the world that one branch of the government can behave lawlessly and the other two wont stop him.
Even if we are able to go back to the status quo, we will still not be trusted. The Democrats cant stay in power indefinitely. The next Republicans in power might do the whole thing all over again.
Itll take decades (if ever) before we are trusted enough to have a major influence on the world stage again.

(21,876 posts)And he's spinning it like it is because of US security interest.
He wants to dissolve NATO because his boss told him to.
And MAGA will hail him as a hero.

(2,050 posts)Feel free to call me naive. The U.S. military will not let Trump destroy NATO. We have spent the last 80 years creating and nurturing NATO as much to shield us as to protect western Europe. The military is made up of a very large number of smart well educated people. They understand the consequences better than anyone. They would refuse to carry out an insane order to attack Greenland and in turn our allies.
I sure as hell don't want to test my theory.
BComplex
(9,751 posts)so far? No. The powers that be are not stopping this, because in America, the supreme court is like the Pope to us: nobody tells their lawlessness to go take a hike, and the republican supremes are the ones allowing ALL of what is happening to us.
flashman13
(2,050 posts)It has all the real guns. The military is always the power behind the throne. Historically, when they withdraw their support, the government falls and flees. We are so far out into uncharted waters anything is possible. I stand by my statement, the U.S. military will not destroy NATO.
thought crime
(1,241 posts)But Trump's threats are already a Military Assault. He is taking Greenland at the point of a gun. Assault with a deadly weapon.
If his "negotiation" fails, the US Military could take over Nuuk in less than an hour. He would then announce that Greenland has been annexed. That's the kind of military action Trump likes.

(2,050 posts)The consequences would be catastrophic. See Swede's opening post.

(2,050 posts)Of course that's a coup which will be staged in defense of the Constitution, NATO and world stability. That is how dangerous Trump is. He doesn't have to nuke the world to crash it. His insatiable thirst for power can crash everything with one intemperate move if the military lets him have his way. We just saw during the Covid pandemic how delicate world stability really is. Also remember it is only American power, coupled with NATO and our Asian allies, that keeps China and Russia from running amok.
I guarantee that if it comes to a choice between Trump's crazy shit or stability under the military, the bankers are going to back the military. I know that sounds beyond crazy. But that is how close we really are to the edge of chaos.
rampartd
(3,857 posts)we are going to need years to establish a stable democracy after this crazy shit.

(2,050 posts)But it will take a generation at least to reestablish trust in the government by the people or trust in the U.S.A. by the world. And then only if post Trump America puts the needs of the many ahead of the greed of the few.
LudwigPastorius
(14,208 posts)I'm not very confident of that.
Trump and Hegseth's generals just invaded and kidnapped the head of state of a sovereign nation - a clearly illegal act initiated by clearly illegal orders.

(10,826 posts)If the US economy collapses - the whole world economy collapses. That will topple other governments
Russia and China would have to see this as an opportunity. US bases close, Russia can grab more real estate.
Is Trump going to save Taiwan? He'll have too many other problems.
It would be a very unstable situation. The major military powers in the world may see it as an opportunity to grab countries from the vacuum that was NATO.
Very dangerous situation with Trump itching to fire some nukes at someone.

Europe needs to take this very seriously. It all needs to be ready to go on the same day Trump tries this.
I am no longer a supporter of the US in any way moving forward after this. Trump will have killed my beloved USA.

Trade has already been disrupted. Along with our business of our government.
What is our national deficit? It seems Republican leaders lean away from balancing the budget. And, take away from we the people and give it to the rich. And there goes the nation debt service payment.
