BREAKING: The Trump administration is suing D.C. over its ban on semi-automatic (AR-15) weapons.

BREAKING: The Trump administration is suing D.C. over its ban on semi-automatic (AR-15) weapons.

DOJ's Civil Rights Division under Harmeet Dhillon is seeking a court ruling that D.C.'s law "prohibiting registration of the AR-15 by law-abiding citizens violates the Second Amendment."

Here is the complaint: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

The complaint was submitted by the following attorneys, led off by Dhillon and signed by Andrew Darlington, who previously was the director of the "Florida Office of Election Crimes and Security." —>

of Washington State.

Plus most gun homicides don't involve AR-15-style weapons. The National Guard shooting involved a handgun--presumably still registerable in DC. (The embassy staff killings this year also involved handguns.)

I suspect it's the ambiguous "assault weapons" clause that's at issue.

Repeating rifles with 30-rd magazines existed by 1630

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalthoff_repeater

The Kalthoff repeater was a type of repeating firearm that was designed by members of the Kalthoff family around 1630,[1] and became the first repeating firearm to be brought into military service.[2] At least nineteen gunsmiths are known to have made weapons following the Kalthoff design.[2] Some early Kalthoff guns were wheellocks,[3][4] but the rest were flintlocks.[5] The capacity varied between 5 and 30 rounds, depending on the style of the magazines.[1] A single forward and back movement of the trigger guard, which could be done in 1–2 seconds, readied the weapon for firing.[6]
