Re: The shootings, something doesn't add up.

So this guy shoots people at Brown in Providence and then travels to Boston to kill someone else, and is found dead with a "self inflicted" gunshot.
I either watch to many movies, or something is fishy in this.

it is quite possible the faculty member at MIT was on his committee or otherwise part of the team of faculty/researchers/grad students who he was mad at.

They had both been at school together in Portugal, before Neves-Valente came to the US.

Fascinating story of how the Providence investigation unfolded.

Doubt he’s a student. No discussion that I’ve heard of motive.

Correction: Apparently, he was a student in physics.

And apparently, he once went to Brown.

Also, coincidentally, the MIT professor was an expert in some area of fusion. Cankles's media company is, illogically, merging with a company that specializes in fusion. Just a little weird coincidence to add to the mix.

The professor was murdered at home.
Makes a lot of sense - was probably welcome there. Faculty often welcome nationals from home countries.
The Brown link now - I am not sur but he had been a Brown student

The MIT was affiliated with a fusion startup but with so many startups and lots of investments the search might be difficult to impossible.

Hmm, here is a lead I just saw. DJT media merged with a fusion power startup this week !!

although (and this is not intended to be any sort of justification at all), academia is a brutal, toxic cesspool of exploitation (I know this being a 2nd generation academic). My own PhD granting department was known as the "shark tank" for their poor treatment of graduate students. One division of my unit had to be dissolved because the faculty could not get along!

Dig deep enough into any workplace/school shooting and you are likely to find a mix of an unstable perp with (as you suggest) some elements of inappropriate external blame and a toxic environment involving bullying and favoritism.

Graduate students are often treated like indentured servants and are so dependent on their abusers that they have no recourse but to take what is dished out. Academia is a caste system as strict and brutal as any other caste system, and while grad students are not the "untouchables" (that is reserved for PhDs who stayed in academia but never had a faculty position - like myself), they are the next lowest rung. What is worse is that they like to strut around and pretend to be so egalitarian and merit based.
