It was a bit "Oh!" for a few seconds, and then "Ah!"; I know some of these styles from either photos, or the many Black women I've seen on subways, and buses. Especially, when I lived Brooklyn for some years - jeri curls were big. But there were pure fros, braids, straightened, mixed fros w braids etc

It was just surprising bc I'd never seen her like that, just 8 yrs of her First Lady hair styles. I really like 4 of 6 styles I saw; she looked fabulous.

Occasionally my Black women friends have talked about their hair. I've read articles here, and there.

I opted for natural hair from the days of black power movement. Had a big Afro. I remember my mum asking me what I had done to my hair. My response was nothing - this is my hair. She got the point. I was done with that crap forever and never gave a damn about others views.
I started braiding my own hair on campus much to the outcry of many.
Sometimes I’d wear French braids - one or two but mostly it was fine braids. These days It’s much thinner.

campaign for Presidency. It must have been the second term, because when she was finished, I spontaneously jumped up to shake her hand, and I said, "Are you going to be the next First Lady who runs for President?" She hesitated for a second and then gave me a huge smile, and I got her autograph....

I loved what she once said about Iowa, that we proved America was ready for a black President, because "there aren't any black folks in Iowa, and they voted for us."
