Trump's inferno of hate is intensifying

The Atlantic
Opinion by Peter Wehner

snip

None of this should be surprising. In 2015, Trump, a draft dodger, said that Republican Senator John McCain, a decorated Navy pilot who was a prisoner of war in Vietnam for more than five years, was “not a war hero.” Trump said McCain was only considered a hero “because he was captured,” adding, “I like people that weren’t captured.” He kept criticizing McCain even after the Arizona senator died. And during a political rally in 2019, he suggested that the late John Dingell, a Democrat who was the longest-serving member of Congress in American history, was looking up from hell. (Trump held a grudge against Dingell’s widow, Debbie, who succeeded her husband in the House.) He has made hundreds, maybe even thousands, of similar comments over the past decade. But if anything, Trump’s barbarity is getting worse, not better. As he ages, his inferno of hate intensifies.

snip

At this stage, more than 10 years after Trump first descended a gold-rimmed escalator into the political scene, there is a temptation to dismiss his comments because they have become commonplace. Don’t let Trump live rent-free in your head, some on the right advise. Don’t waste time chasing his foolish and cruel comments, some of his critics warn. It’s oxygen to him. His defenders insist he’s the P. T. Barnum of American politics, a brilliant self-promoter and showman, and that it’s a mistake to pay too much attention to his words.

snip

Heraclitus taught that character is destiny. In Trump’s case, his sociopathy is destiny. His narcissism; his lack of conscience, remorse, or empathy; his pathological lying and grandiosity; his sense of entitlement, impulsivity, and aggression; his cruelty, predatory behavior, and sadism—these are the forces that drive him. If we don’t understand that, we understand almost nothing of importance about him. And beware: When a man with Trump’s personality feels caged in, when he feels besieged and abandoned and begins to lose control of events, he becomes more desperate and more dangerous.

snip

Trump sets the pace, and his apparatchiks follow. Many of them have gained power and made money dumping toxic sewage into our civic water supply. But their devotion comes at a personal cost. Those who relish cruelty, who take special delight in dehumanizing others, are engaging in self-harm of a certain kind. “When we desecrate the divinity of others,” the author Brené Brown wrote, “we desecrate our own, and we betray our humanity.”

I am shocked that they won't allow cameras.

"They should allow Jack Smith to testify in public. Every special counsel report has been released. And every special counsel or independent counsel has testified in public. So, yeah, they are trying to get him on the fast road to one of their ridiculous prosecutions," Raskin said.

"Republicans don't want to go along with it because they want to get him into a backroom and then cherry-pick statements, distort them, leak them, spin them," Raskin added.

When asked whether there was a reason why the DOJ shouldn’t publish Smith’s full work, Republicans pointed to the order that had originally blocked Volume II, as well as ongoing adjudication over its release.

They will cover it up and as the article states, they will cherry pick what can be released. BS!

those around the felon have suggested that he should avoid a fight with Mr. Smith. One notes that he rarely rants about Mr. Smith any more. This may be one of the main reasons his puppets will fight tooth & nail to keep coverage of Mr. Smith out of the news.

politicians that I try to listen to very closely. I trust them to be insightful, informed, and honest. One of the very best of these in my long life is Rep. Jamie Raskin. There have been a number of times in recent months where he has said that along with the Epstein scandal files, they need to release Mr. Smith's second report. This raises an interesting question if, among the documents the felon stole back when President Biden sent him packing, were at least some document the felon's connections to Epstein.

Rep. Raskin is highly intelligent, and he is also very capable. He is able to organize and take actions "behind the scenes" and they are making advances beneath the surface as defined by the media. So I share the frustrations that several are speaking about. This meeting may well be disappointing, in the context of media coverage, yet another stumbling block in a path towards progress.

I also have confidence that in a relatively short time, there will be republicans in the House trying to separate from the felon. We need public pressure, using Amendment 1 rights and contacting elected representatives. I anticipate parts of Mr. Smith's second report being made public sometime before November of 2026.

He is not only articulate, knows his stuff and speaks well, but he's also willing to speak out! And we've seen that coming from him over and over, especially now. We've heard him calling for the Epstein files to be released as well as Jack Smith's final report.

And so I'm sure hoping that you're right, that Jack Smith's report will finally be made public. He is also extremely capable and I have no doubt that he did a complete job. Certainly the public deserves to see his report which was the point of his efforts and we know that he asked to speak publicly but was stymied by Republican Trump loyalists. It would be ideal if it came out before November 2026, but then it sure might help Democrats sweep the midterms. *fingers crossed*

are astute and creative....I recommend reading many.

Like the article in OP, blunt assessment of TSF is welcome and about damn time. Our Petty, Hollow, Squalid Ogre in Chief:

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/12/16/opinion/trump-reiner-death-post-truth-social.html

Though I tend to think it’s usually a waste of space to devote a column to President Trump’s personality — what more is there to say about the character of this petty, hollow, squalid, overstuffed man? — sometimes the point bears stressing: We are led by the most loathsome human being ever to occupy the White House.

...

Right now, in every grotesque social media post; in every cabinet meeting devoted, North Korea-like, to adulating him; in every executive-order-signing ceremony intended to make him appear like a Chinese emperor; in every fawning reference to all the peace he’s supposedly brought the world; in every Neronic enlargement of the White House’s East Wing; in every classless dig at his predecessor; in every shady deal his family is striking to enrich itself; in every White House gathering of tech billionaires paying him court (in the literal senses of both “pay” and “court”); in every visiting foreign leader who learns to abase himself to avoid some capricious tariff or other punishment — in all this and more, our standards as a nation are being debased, our manners barbarized.

Upon which I will then extinguish with some choice bodily fluids.
