During a week when French President Emmanuel Macron received a hero’s welcome at Sichuan University in China, France itself was under threat. As Macron met with Xi Jinping, unidentified drones circled over one of France’s most sensitive military sites: its top nuclear submarine base. The French military opened fire, unclear whether the drones were downed. What is clear is the suspected origin. European intelligence officials say the drones may be Russian, another probe to test NATO’s resolve at a moment when the United States has stepped away from its most fundamental commitments.

This was not an isolated incident. In Ireland, an assassination attempt on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy went largely unnoticed by U.S. media. Multiple Russian drones positioned themselves along the approach path to Zelensky’s plane as he arrived to address the Irish Parliament. His aircraft landed ahead of schedule, likely avoiding a catastrophic strike. European leaders understand exactly what they are facing. The only thing missing is the support that once defined the transatlantic alliance.

Under this administration, that support has evaporated. There has been no U.S. military assistance to Ukraine this year. None. Instead of reinforcing Ukraine as Russia escalates, the United States is now removing sanctions on Russian energy giants like Lukoil, permitting its global operations to resume freely through 2026. At the same time, American officials have been lobbying European governments to block EU efforts to use frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine’s defense and reconstruction. The new U.S. position is unmistakable: weaken Ukraine to strengthen Putin.

European leaders have taken notice. Der Spiegel obtained leaked notes from a high-level call between Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and Zelenskyy. Their warnings were direct. Macron reportedly used the word “betrayal,” cautioning that Washington may attempt to push Ukraine into surrendering territory without offering any security guarantees. Scholz warned Zelensky that “the United States is playing games with you and with us.” Stubb said Zelensky should not be left alone in any room with Jared Kushner or Richard Grenell, the unofficial envoys advancing Trump’s agenda in Europe. Rutte agreed, emphasizing that Zelensky’s personal safety is at risk.

Throughout the discussion, European officials voiced frustration that Washington appears to be negotiating with Moscow while sidelining EU national security advisers.

Leaders, including Macron, Rutte, Stubb, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, insisted that any settlement must include enforceable security guarantees for Ukraine and leave decisions on frozen Russian assets under European control.

Zelensky said the next days will be critical. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned the president, "Be very careful... They are playing games with both you and us."

The situation's bad enough without clumsy, irresponsible exaggeration.

More likely, the drone flights were intended to shut down the airport and disrupt Zelensky's arrival.

An Irish navy ship spotted up to five drones operating near the flight path of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s aircraft as he arrived for a state visit to Ireland on Monday, Irish and Ukrainian media reported. The sighting triggered a major security alert due to concerns it was an attempt to interfere with the flight path, the Irish Times reported. The news outlet quoted unnamed sources as saying the aircraft, which arrived slightly early, was not in any danger. The Journal website reported that the drones reached the location where Zelenskyy’s plane was expected to be at the exact moment it had been due to pass. It said inquiries were being carried out to determine whether the drones took off from land or an undetected ship. They were first spotted north-east of Dublin, around 20km (12 miles) from the airport, both news outlets reported. Ukrainian media quoted an adviser to Zelenskyy, Dmytro Lytvyn, as saying that Ukrainian officials were made aware of the drones, but no action was deemed necessary. “According to their data, there were indeed such drones, but this did not affect the visit and there was no need to force any change to the visit.” Ireland’s Defence Forces said it had no comment on the specifics of any alleged incidents for security reasons. “However, Defence Forces support to the security operation, led by An Garda Siochana [police], was successfully deployed in multiple means ultimately leading to a safe and successful visit,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

There have been numerous attempts on Zelensky's life since the Russian invasion. I've yet to see any evidence this was one of them.

Once they failed to intercept Zelensky's plane, the drones turned their attention to circling the offshore patrol vessel William Butler Yeats. There's no evidence the drones were armed, and there were reports that they didn't extinguish their operating lights, which would have been expected if this was a full-blooded attack.

On the contrary. They didn't judge the drones to pose a threat, and nor did Zelensky's own entourage as shown by the quotes in the Guardian piece I cited, and borne out by many media accounts of the incident based on statements from the Garda and Irish security services.
