(40,688 posts)I've been reading a biography of Napoleon, and been learning for the first time what a truly horrible despot he was -- his boundless narcissism was well recorded by history, but Trmp seems to be matching him in that regard.
(BTW, don't blame Pius VII for giving in to pressure to crown NB Emperor -- Pius VI's death in one of Napoleon's prisons was all the persuasion it took. It didn't keep Pius VII out of jail forever, either. Like I said -- a truly horrible despot.)

(9,216 posts)Napoleon also threw up a lot. He war dumber than the Orange Oligarch about eating. There's a YouTube channel called "Tasting History" which I find fascinating for many reasons, He reconstructs, cooks, and tastes recipes for historical foods. and throws in complementary cultural information. Look for the video on "Chicken Marengo" and check it out if you want to know just how bad his digestion was. I'm not saying this as an excuse - there is no excuse - but you might take some comfort for his horribleness in the way he suffered.

(40,688 posts)I suspect that was connected to the vomiting.
From what I've been reading, Napoleon was a lot like Hitler -- very convinced of his own greatness, but making huge blunders especially re. logistics and supply, with occasional brilliant victories which owed something to luck and capable officers -- against the British, with their more rigorously trained officers, he consistently came up short. Even if the allies hadn't defeated him, the French people were getting pretty sick of his constant "appetite for war", with his constant calls for conscripts to replace the ones lost in his previous campaigns. I've just reached the point where his disastrous campaigns in Iberia caused the age for conscription to drop to sixteen. He had lost two entire armies by that point and was grinding away at what was left of the current army -- and we haven't even gotten to the invasion of Russia yet. All in all, a pretty horrible "leader". But he's still remembered favorably by some. He did introduce the new French Code of Law, but also introduced an omnipresent secret police force, suppression of most newspapers, and imprisonment of his critics -- which went so far as execution in some cases. On balance, I'd say France (and Europe) would have been much better off without him.

(9,216 posts)The digestive issues were also hidden.
But his nutrition was virtually non-existent. You've heard of "meat and potatoes" men. Well, Napoleon wouldn't even eat the potatoes. I doubt that caused the vomiting - but it also couldn't have helped.
