Florida House barrels ahead on redistricting despite DeSantis' proposed timeline
TALLAHASSEE, Florida Floridas Republican-controlled Legislature officially started a contentious battle over mid-decade redistricting Thursday. But there are growing signs it may not go smoothly.
During a brief inaugural meeting, the state House Republican in charge of congressional redistricting insisted that any new map drawn by legislators will not be drawn in a way to help the GOP. This was met by guffaws of laughter from a committee room filled largely with opponents who attended the meeting at the urging of voting and civil rights groups.
State Rep. Mike Redondo, a Miami Republican, also laid out a potential timeline that would clash with the stated goals of both Gov. Ron DeSantis and state Senate President Ben Albritton. Redondo said that if the House moves ahead, it needs to do so during the regular session that starts next month and ends in mid-March. The governor and Albritton, however, have suggested holding off and adopting a new map during a special session sometime in the spring.
It would be irresponsible to delay the creation and passage of a new map, especially until after session, Redondo said. It would also be irresponsible to any who are called to civil service, and most importantly it would be irresponsible to the citizens of Florida.
The national tug-of-war over mid-decade redistricting sparked by President Donald Trump and the White House has already drawn in large states such as Texas and California. Republicans who support the effort in Florida believe the state could yield three to five additional GOP House seats ahead of the 2026 midterms a haul big enough to influence control of Congress.
