Bacon calls 'total baloney' on idea report exonerates Hegseth

Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) said Thursday a Department of Defense (DOD) watchdog report did not exonerate Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth from using an encrypted messaging app to share details about a pending strike on Houthis in Yemen.

“No, that is total baloney,” Bacon said during a CNN interview. “I have better words for it, but you can’t say it on TV. I read the report and what I saw what had happened was wrong, but the report makes clear that the secretary put sensitive information that would ordinarily be classified.”

The Office of Inspector General’s report found Hegseth jeopardized troop safety and violated department policy by using Signal. Bacon said Hegseth’s “unclassified phone is a top target.”

“And if this information got to Yemen, it would have compromised the mission, and we could have put our pilots at risk,” he continued. “And so the report was very clear on this, and what troubles me, instead of taking responsibilities, [saying] ‘It was my fault,’ I learned from it,’ they used phrases like, ‘We’re totally exonerated.'”
