The Trump administration released its latest National Security Strategy--and one thing that can be said is that there is no more pretending. Itâs a plan to weaken European unity, to make Europe MAGA, to force Europe to take economic dictation by the USAâ¦. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

Comment from Anne Applebaum:
The new National Security Strategy is a propaganda document, designed to be widely read. It is also a performative suicide. Hard to think of another great power ever abdicating its influence so quickly and so publicly. It will be worth following the reactions around the world, not just in Europe.

(23,056 posts)Putin wasn't the only one pulling for Brexit.
And not only over policy differences - but because they see the euro as the currency most likely to replace the dollar as the world's reserve currency.
(something which, in their rank stupidity, they're doing everything possible to bring about)

Krasnov's attacks on Jerome Powell to lower interest rates are designed to crash the dollar.

U.S. neocons have known this for decades - and, ironically, in Trump they've got their biggest problem ever in that regard.
Play stupid games; win stupid prizes.

(60,724 posts)In retrospect, it might be there was a slow consolidation of power made possible by getting enough Supreme Court Justices and gerrymandering an undeserved majority in both many states and the House of Representatives.
This may come down to whether there are enough Republicans that don't want this.

(8,868 posts)Trump's standing in most of Europe is about level with that of his rancid poop, European countries are already turning away from buying arms from US suppliers because he's proven so unreliable and untrustworthy, he's making good headway in running the US economy into the ground, and if he wants to end up rendering US influence in Europe irrelevant except as a marginal annoyance, this plan is the way to go.
As for NATO, an alliance without the burden of Trump's current unpredictable incarnation of the US would only end up being stronger.
