it was massive and got horrific gas mileage. Frankly school buses do better now than that did 20 years ago. It was, to be fair, a great car to move from Ohio to NC in. I was able to move a whole bunch of my stuff. But it was otherwise very impractical. I just bought a Hyundai Elantra Hybrid. I get just under 50 mpg in it so far. I literally had no American made option in terms of sedans.

If those EV sales didn’t materialize — and the rules weren’t reduced by Biden in response — GM would have had to limit sales of gasoline-powered vehicles and possibly shut down some of its production, Barra said at the New York Times Dealbook conference in New York on Wednesday.

“We were going to have to start shutting down plants,” Barra said.

There were seven kids and my parents and that's the only vehicle that would hold us all. We even had an Edsel station wagon and one time we had a funeral car. It had kneelers that folded down in the middle seat and we used to fight over who was going to get those seats. They were always used cars as we were poor. Vehicle emission systems were at peak effectiveness in the early 90's. In that era, we had catalyst systems and MFI that eliminated most pollutants. Since then, EGR and EVAP systems have grown out of control and are a plague for the consumer. That's not to even mention the 100+ sensors now required to monitor all of it and the dozens of other tech that has been implemented in an attempt to gain 0.01% extra efficiency. It's madness at this point.
All of the stuff added since then have been for minor, and I mean extremely minor gains and all at a massive cost. Not only cost in development and manufacturing, but they consume the vast majority of repair bills over the life of the vehicle, often sending otherwise mechanically serviceable vehicles to the scrap yard as they are no long worth fixing from a monetary viewpoint, or the mfg simply stopped making the parts.
The idea was taken way too far and it is the primary reason you now have to get 7 year loans to afford a new vehicle. The entire system needs to be revisited and brought back to a reasonable level. It is way out of control.
