Trump says he may cut income tax 'completely' because of tariff income

PALM BEACH, Florida, Nov 27 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday his administration may slash income tax completely over the next couple of years because of government revenue generated from tariffs.

"Over the next couple of years, I think we'll substantially be cutting and maybe cutting out completely, but we'll be cutting income tax.

Could be almost completely cutting it because the money we're taking in is going to be so large," Trump told U.S. military service members on a video call.

which may make it the most idiotic thing anyone has ever said.

Total tariff revenue for FY2025 was about $195 million. The highest monthly total was $30 million. Project that over a full year and it's still just $360 million.

The revenue from individual income taxes only was $2.66 Trillion! The revenue from ALL federal taxes was about $5 Trillion!!

Therefore, to replace JUST the individual income tax, would require tariff revenue to increase by 9 times the level of the highest month thus far AND continue at that level for a full year. To replace ALL federal taxes would require tariff revenue to increase by 16 to 17 times the highest monthly level so far and continue at that level.

In other words, the idea that tariff revenue could replace income tax revenue is not just insane, it's BATSHIT INSANE!! CUCKOO BANANAS INSANE!! NEED TO BE LOCKED UP IN A RUBBER ROOM INSANE!!!

Economists have crunched the numbers, and found you'd need a tariff rate of 100%, on ALL imports, to offset income taxes at the current rate.

That also assumes that our imports wouldn't fall off a cliff due to the massive increase in the price of imported goods, which we know is impossible.

AND, it means that none of the tariff money could go towards his $2000 rebate check OR paying off the federal debt.

We've reached a point similar to Hitler playing with model cities of Germania in his bunker, planning out his glorious 3rd Reich, while bombs were falling on Berlin. Except for Trump, it's economic fantasy, not architectural.

Not all income tax can go away. You need to tax income to feed the Social Security Fund.

And no, I don’t accept that just keeping more of our money in our pockets will guarantee us enuf money saved to build our own retirements. Unless you take the time to teach everyone how to save, and provide better safer saving ‘instruments” for our retirement money.

The Stock market was never the answer. There is no interest on regular savings accounts anymore. CD’s are OK but those have also faced shrinkage of interest rates. I think that after a certain age, they shouldn’t be allowed to tax the pre-tax money you set aside. And there shouldn’t be a required minimum distribution starting at a certain age. I’m torn between taking the money out which means it sits in a low/no interest savings or CD. I need to maximize what’s in there so I don’t face destitution and will need the money for a nursing home.

At 71, I’ve seen it all, and tried various methods. They all suck. I’m in a money market fund now. Moved from the stock market after 3 serious crashes since 2000. Not again. Did it the week after Trump was re-elected. Yea, I’ve missed some highs now, but my money is stable and I get a small bit of interest every month. My balance isn’t going up and down like a yoyo.
