LBJ got more of his domestic agenda passed in the wake of his death than JFK could have. That's no fault of JFK's, but LBJ knew how to capitalize on the moment. The escalation in Vietnam is a tragedy for many reasons, one of which is that it tarnished the legacy of what was done domestically.

I know only seniors remember him but I will take today to celebrate the life and values and mourn what could have been and the seeming rejection of those values.

I remember what a hopeful and exciting time it was, and the feelings of energy and whole new, and attainable, possibilities. We were all young again and our hopes and dreams felt completely attainable. He launched our quest to go to the moon. Sheesh, even THAT was a new possibility.

That ambition became a reality before the end of that same decade. I’ve always felt a little bit sad that he never lived to see it.

Rode his bike around with a "Kennedy" sign in 1960.
Three assassinations that decade forever altered History.
What could have been?
It's ironic that an amendment designed to arm The People against Authoritarian Over-reach has condemned our Promise and killed so many citizens, yet doesn't rise to meet the threat facing us from a rogue madman.

He stands alone in his eternal youth, a shining promise of what could have been, his even gaze illuminating this worn-out tired dirty carnival midway world of broken dreams and empty promises.

My teacher who I really didn't like was called out from our classroom. When she came back, I was shocked. She was ashened faced. Told us about the shooting. Then on our recently installed intercom the principal announced the president's death. Let out early.

I don't think I saw Oswald being shot. I do remember some of the funeral- the riderless horse, casket, Jackie, RFK, the kids.

The pall of the adults was an amazing thing those days.

I saw video/film of his speech ?Summer '63 at American University way later. Makes you wonder at lost potential.
